Was Anyone 5'9 or taller and over 300 pounds at surgery?
I am 5'9 and was over 300 pounds at surgery and my weight loss has been pretty slow, not that I worry about it every minute I feel that it is slow since I am on the taller side. My mother and sister both had the surgery and are both under 5'5 they made it under the 200 mark before their 6 month anniversay and I am still struggling with it. They tell me it is because I am soo tall that I have lost inches and gained alot of muscle. I totally understand and just wanted to know if other people are in the same boat as I am in, if they feel different because you are a little bit taller?? I see the weight loss of people here and if they made it under 100 at 6 months and wonder how tall they may be?? Just a thought??
Hi Yvette,
Congratulations! you have done a great job. I too am tall, 6', but was/am considered a "light weight" -- high was 268, BMI 37. But I had co-morbity of Diabetes & rising blood pressure.
I was told all the time my weight loss would be slow, for any number of reasons --- if I asked 10 people, I'd get 10 different responses, but I don't feel that has been true, I'm now 6 lbs from my goal and Saturday was my 6 month mark.
Bottomline.....Weightloss after WLS varies greatly from person to person. One thing I did was take my measurements - and I feel this really helped it hit home, what was going on with my body. If you didn't, do it now, then again every 1-2 month.....this really gives a more accurate account, especially if you feel the pounds are coming off slowly.
Try not to compare yourself to others, this can be very disappointing or frustrating. If you feel you're not quite on track, call your Dr & ask for a check up or talk your nutritionist for some guidance.
Take care and I wish you continued success on this aweseome journey.
Regards,
Pam

Hey Yvette - I am 5' 10" and lost about 125 pounds in six months. Of course I started a 100 pounds heavier than you and I am a man as well. You're doing just fine. It takes A LOT of work to generate the amount of muscle needed to slow down your weight loss. A LOT.
I read in your profile you're doing Curves and that's great. One thing to consider adding to your exercise routine is interval training. Basically it's adding intervals of high stress exercise to your normal routine. So if you're a walker - jog/run a block or two every 3-5 minutes. If you're using a treadmill bump up the speed for a minute or two and then back down for 5 minutes. Repeat this through out your workout. Basically it jolts your body a bit - speeds things up and you don't get complacent with the routine you're in.
I'm not sure if you can do a machine or two more quickly at higher rates at Curves but I am assuming you could (guys aren't allowed so I am ignorant of the details). Pick a machine to do at high intensity once a visit... then add two machines at high intensity, etc. Good luck.
Hey Yvette....
I am 5'9" and I started out at 349 lbs. Yesterday was my 6 month mark and I am down 113 lbs. I don't think our height has anything to do with it. But that's just me. I lost really fast in the beginning, but it has slowed down considerable as they have all told me that it would. But I am ok with that. It was pretty scary to see the scale going down so fast. I was always taught that losing weight so fast isn't healthy for you. I also figure that now with it going so slow that maybe I'll be able to actually "see" what I look like!! I, probably like many people, still don't really see the difference. Unless, of course I look at pictures. Then I just get scared! How can I not see that person in the mirror!!! I don't get it!
Congrats on your loss.........you are doing great!!!
