FEMALE QUESTION>
How many people out there lost their cycles before surgery? And how many regained the monthly visitor after surgery? i hadn't had regular visits for about 4-5 years. in 2002 my doctor gave me the "pill" to have a period. they would come, but not regularly. about 6 weeks after surgery i had a good "visit" from "grandma" my doctor, warned me about making sure to use double protection for pregancy. i'm also wondering what you ladies are using beside the old latex choice. thanks in advance.
jennifer, from Akron, Ohio.
I find that constantly nagging my husband irritates him enough to not want sex.
Seriously though, you definitely want to talk to your ob/gyn about the newer options. It all depends on your situation.
If you don't want kids for the next 5 years or so, and you haven't had cervical problems, then an IUD could be a good choice. If you might want kids sooner, you could try the NuvaRing, which is the same hormones as in birth control pills, only it is inserted into the vagina (it's a small rubber ring) and it releases the hormones there. The hormone level remains far more stable throughout the cycle than it does with bcp's, and because it has nothing to do with our digestive tract, the surgery doesn't change it's effectiveness (unless somehow the hormones released from our burned up fat somehow changes the balance). It's inserted the day after your period and stays in for three weeks, then nothing for the week you menstruate, then another ring.
I'm sure there's plenty of other cool things out there, but I'm leaning on dh to get snipped. I gotta say that mentioning THAT seems to work in a contraceptive way on its own .

Susan
I've NEVER been regular. Got it before surgery, got it after surgery. Just a bit more intense now. I can start my new birth control pills on Sunday. I got switched to Seasonale. I'll only get the visitor every 3 months now. Thank goodness because I can't stand the cramps anymore. Other than that, that's the only protection we use. Other than me saying NO..LOL.
I have the merena IUD and I love it! I was always forgetting to take my pill. When I had it put in 2yrs ago my visitor stopped comming (doctor said that might happen) but the surgery has done some wacky things...now i get light spotting monthly and definately PMS...but I still am REALLY happy with the IUD!

Whatever you do, the patch, the pill, the ring, the iud, the female condom, just DON'T DO DEPO PROVERA!!!!! That is partially what happened to me and how i got started gaining weight. (50+ in 2 treatments!) Plus it wreeked havoc on my hormones. It is terrible and is currently on the block for re investigation of it's FDA approval status.
Anyhow, don't go there but talk to you GYN about the best option for you!
Good luck~
