Boy what an adventure!
Hi everyone!
I have debated in sharing some of my recent story as it is not so pretty. I am currently 10.5 weeks out from surgery. I have lost 70 pounds. The past three weeks I had been feeling tired, and groggy. Well the last straw was when my legs started getting numb. Last Monday I went to urgent care thinking that I may have had a blood clot in my leg. They did an Ultrasound and that was not the problem. So they decided to have me follow-up with my PCP on Thursday. I had an appointment with Dr. Rawlins on Tuesday for my 2 month follow-up. That is when I learned that I was down 70#'s. I explained to Crystal and Dr. Rawlins that I did not feel good and that I was not able to keep anything down. I could not even drink water. I was dry heaving three to four times a day. I was not eating. They decided that I needed to have an Upper GI to check for a stricture. That was scheduled for this Monday. On Thursday I saw my PCP who ordered IV fluids as he dignosed me as severly dehydrated. I got those on Thursday and then again on Saturday. I was still dry heaving and not able to keep things down. By this time I had started getting really light headed and felt like I was walking on spagetti legs. My body was numb in the front all the way up to my breastbone. On Sunday I was feeliing a bit better-not much. I stayed home from church and hung out in the basement as it is cooler there. About 3 PM I was coming down the stairs to the basement from a bathroom trip and passed out. Needless to say it was not a pleasant experience. My DH was trying to help me up when my hands started to cramp up, then my feet. My DH was on the phone with my PCP's office, things just got worse. I had my DH call 911 as I got to the bottom of the steps. I felt like I was having a stroke. The Paramedics arrived, and had me start breathing regularly. The cramps in my hands and feet started to relax. I just kept thinking that here were these 100 pound firemen and paramedics how were they going to get me up stairs? The next thought was at least I was not over 300 pounds anymore. I went to the hosptial in the ambulance. They finally got things figured out and I have serve vitamin B, phosperous, and potessium deficency. They gave me a banana bag and I at least felt like I could keep down water and juice. On Monday I filled the RX for potessium and phosperous, had my upper GI. On Tuesday, Dr. Rawlins called and let me know the upper GI was fine. I explained what I have been going through. He checked my labs again, and then scheduled for me to have three shots of thymine this week. He said that he had just rececently read an article about the issue with the neuromuscular system after WLS. So I am finally on the up swing. My legs are still weak but I feel so much better. I can at least think straight again. My body is still numb but it will take time to get it back to normal. I can finally eat and drink without throwing up again. Last week, I would have told anyone that I regretted my decision to have the surgery. This week knowing the causes and the way to correct these issues I am back to no regrets. I will keep everyone posted as this are going. I hope to be back in the full swing of things soon.
