Staph Infection on Incision line

Well, I'm 6 weeks out, and about 10 days ago, my incision got infected and is open about 2 inches in diameter. I had gone to the ER cause it was oozing green gunk and stuff, and they took a culture of it and put me on Keflex. Well, low and behold, the culture came back positive for the major nasty staph that is resiliant to most antibiotics, including the one they put me on. I found this out today, and the culture was done a week ago. There are only 3 antibiotics that this particular strain is not resiliant to, and of the 3, I'm allergic to one, another only comes in pill form, and the last can only be given thru IV. I am on the pill form (capsule) and can mix it with juice to get it down that way and it will still be effective. I also found out that the "skin layer" that I see that everyone kept insisting was not the muscle showing, is actually the muscle showing! I thought so. Anyway, they don't have plans right now to restitch the opening or anything, supposed to heal on it's own I guess. Here's hoping it doesn't spread into any other parts of my body or anything. You're getting the standard reccomended treatment for this. Unfortunately, it happens sometimes. I hope you heal quickly.

Sorry to hear about your infection. A week after my surgery, the bottom of my incision opened up and started to drain. I went in and the doctor took out the last two stiches. I have been draining ever since. I had a small infection but nothing bad. It is slowly closing up on its own. It was the size of a half dollar now its small than a dime. I will give you a small piece of advice if you want it. I have to keep mine covered to soak up the drainage. Get the tape for senitive skin. I didn't at first and now have sores on my tummy from the tape since it pulls off a few layers of skin. Since I started using the senitive tape, I have had less sores. I hope everything goes well and you heal quickly. Toni

Sounds yukky!! I did not have stitches...I was "glued" back together! I have had no problems and no stitches to get out! That was good!! Jeannie

Hello Andrea. I too had staph infection - TWICE! They sent me home with Keflex and I drank that (ugh!) for 10 days. Shortly thereafter, I had to see my surgeon again cause I could see it was infected again. She had to open up about one inch and drain the incision - packed it, and sent me home with KEFLEX again. It finally closed up o n its's own but it took another 10 days or so. My surgery was 5-18. My incision is still sore and because I wasn't getting enough fluids in - Fri nite I had to go to the ER cause I was dehyudrated - and I had a kidney stone. It was miserable. Watch the incision - did blood drain at all? Mine did. Hope you're feeling better- keep me posted. Thanks, Chris
