hi from a newbie
Hi everyone!
I had my RNY (non-lap) on 5/24/04. So far, I've lost 24 lbs and I'm feeling great! I started solid food last week and also began a walking regimen.
I have been a little disappointed in that I lost 20 pounds during the first 3 weeks but only 4 pounds during weeks 4 & 5. I read on another forum that you have to consume 800-1000 calories per day or your metabolism shuts down and you won't lose. Anyone else heard this (especially from their dr)? I know I'm not taking in that many calories because I'm only eating 3 ounces four times per day, and trying to stick mostly to proteins and dairy. I'd be interested to know if anyone else is using the # of calories as their eating guideline.
The forums on this website are wonderful and I am so excited about sharing experiences and questions as we all journey toward success!

Hi-I'm doing about the same as you-I've only lost twenty-something pounds and I had my surgery May 28.
My doctor and dietician have me on 600 cal/day for the first two months, then up to 800 cal/day. I have been very nauseated lately and the foods I seem to be able to stomach aren't as high in protein or as lean as I'd like them to be. I ordered some Nectar-it should be here today-and I'm hoping I can at least get my protein in that way.
My doctor recommends fast walking an hour a day at this point to keep the metabolism going, but the nausea and total fatigue have made it hard to do that. I'm struggling to do what's right but I feel depressed and worried that I'm going to fail. Good thing I've been reading the boards for a year now-I knew to expect these feelings.
Welcome to the boards and congrats on your success!
Hugs,
Susan
Hi Jennifer,
I had my surgery on May 25th and have lost about 21.5lbs. I bounce around a bit on the calories per day because I try to vary my menu as much as possible right now to keep it exciting and interesting. I go from around 350-800 per day. I eat meals per day and one snack. I'm supposed to be getting two protein shakes and do if I've not gotten in enough protein from my food that day. I'm only required to do the shakes for six weeks; one more week on shakes and they are outta here foreva. YEAH!!!

Welcome! I was told that we needed to set a goal of around 1000 cal a day. I'm already getting just about that most days now. I've been very fortunate not to have significant nausea or difficulties with eating. I just chew very well. I'm getting in my protein almost every day and have found that as my calorie, water, and protein intake got more consistent, my weight loss has picked up some. I'm sitting at 30 pounds less right now and had surgery on 5/25/04. I expect to hit plateaus, though. They are common, according to my friends who have already traveled this path. I too found it very hard to exercise on low calories.... I'm getting far more energy now and I attribute it to the increase in my diet. We'll see what comes.
