Besides Shakes, where are you getting your protein?

For those of us not having the best luck with the shakes, where have you found you can get a good amount of protein? I know someone said potted meat, and believe me, I am eating that. I just thought maybe this could be a place we could all list what we have found that helps our protein count. If this has been done, forgive me. I only play on the computer at work and most of the time I only have time to check in periodically.

So far, I have eaten various chicken dishes, beef stew, shrimp salad, chili, tuna, eggs, cheese, and I also put unflavored unjury into soup, and anything I cook. I've even put it in oatmeal. My stomach gets upset when I try to drink it as a shake but I tolerate it well mixed into food.

Hood makes a carb counter milk in both chocolate and regular. One cup has 12 grams of protein, much more than regular milk and it has only 3 grams of carbs. Low fat cottage cheese is good too, as are eggs. Are you still doing shakes at this point?

I am still attempting the shakes, but for some reason they wont sit well on my stomach, if I can get them down. I don't understand it either. I started drinking shakes before my surgery so I wouldn't have this problem and my tastes and what I can tolerate seems to have changed for some reason.

Lowfat cottage cheese is a winner-14 g of protein for 1/2 cup serving (if you can eat that much). I've been eating eggs, cheese, deli lunchmeat shaved (btw, turkey is 20g of protein per 100 cal!!!...it takes a wonking FOUR ounces to do that, though), ground beef with a smidge of ragu, canned chicken breast, tuna. Milk products are the big way my dietician has us getting protein in, but so far I have been very non-compliant as I can't gag down the milk and I'd rather get it from other foods. I've also had a few Atkins Advantage peanut butter bars-about 20 g of protein but also over 200 calories. Good luck- Susan

WOW... I am hurting right now after eating just 2 bites of baked chicken. Usually its fine- this has only happened one other time with chicken but I thought it was the mayo in the chicken salad I had made. Lemme tell you, after feeling like this I sure was glad to find some other ideas for portein intake cuz this I cannot deal with- OUCH! I have been doing a lot of beans, chili, soy products are great also and cheese. I just started part-skim ricotta at someone's suggestion.

I do one shake per day. Isopure with 50 grams of protein per 12 ozs. I drink about half of that. The rest I get from lean meat, chicken, salmon, beans, canned chili, yogurt and cheese. I also do one protein bar a day as well. I don't do potted meat cause its too high in fat and gives me the runs!!! Antoinette in TX banded 5-10-04 256/235/150

HI, When I was just post-op, and on liquids for 4 weeks, I found Lentil Soup to be very good (I like it anyway), during that time I would put it through the blender for a few whirls. Then heat it up, add some chili powder or pepper for spice, and it was good to go! Lowfat, pretty high protein. Now I eat it without beneit of the blender. Good Luck Pam RNY 5/13/04
