Almost Two Weeks in! Shoulder Pain, Doing too much!

Hi, Everyone! My go**** is cheering to hear about everyone's feelings. I couldn't believe how well the surgery went - except for one tiny meltdown because of a nurse's intentional neglect, I was overwhelmed by the kindness and humor of the hospital staff. I broke a bone in my foot about 4 weeks ago but knew darn well that if i went and had it set my surgery would have to be rescheduled (blood clots, etc) So now I am limping around, it's too late to set it now and it will just need to heal naturally. I don't regret my decision for a moment, but I sure hope it heals soon! I was feeling so well yesterday, kind of getting a handle on the eating and balancing okay with the drinking that I overdid - carried the cat in her carrier to the vet, went grocery shopping and lifted the bags full of catfood and dogfood tins and I have been paying for it every since. Sharp pains in the places where scar tissue is forming, so I must have pulled places I should have been gentle with. I laid low today but sure hope tomorrow is better. I had to make myself a little chart to keep track of what I do each day, including which vitamins I take, how many grams of protein, glasses of water, drugs, results of the 4 blood sugar tests I am taking a day (now that I am off all diabetes meds!!!) - it seemed a lot, so I keep track along with my food log and rough estimates of caloric as well as protein intake. I found that the new Dr. Phil book, The Ulimate Weight Solution Food Guide is a great source for both calories and protein values. Plus, where things are located in the guide help you think about whether or not this is a good choice or not. I find I am not minding the pureed foods at all. Only 4 more weeks of them, and I really like the sugar free puddings and jellos, as well as the soups, etc I puree in my little $7 Walgreens food processor. I use a sippy cup I got at Target so I remember not to gulp (and sometimes I still forget). They had the cup with their summer plastic dishes and cups. Since it holds 16 ounces it makes it easy to remember to drink 3 of those cups and eat 4 sugar free popsicles to get in my 64 ounces of water! Wahoo for all of us. I still look at the Before/After pictures daily, and wonder if I will ever get to that 100 pound point. I know I will, but I seem to be more impatient than ususal these days, now that I know I will not be gaining these pounds lost back again. What a glorious feeling! Just discovered no fat Kool Whip on the sugar free jello - it tastes like a real party!!! By the way, regarding the shoulder pain I was reading about, my surgeons said that they tried really hard to get out all gas and there really wasn't a problem with gas BUT since they also repaired an enormous hiatal hernia on me, that pain from the esophogus is refleced in the shoulders as well. Just thought that might apply to some of you too. Onward! Aren't we lucky! Warmest wishes to all, Nancy Akerly Sister Bay, WI

Congrats on your success. May I ask you a question. The food processor you use, is it a food chopper? I am trying to find something other than my blender. What is the brand? Also what kind of pureed foods are you eating? Thanks for your help

Dear Linda, I bought a Kitchen Gourmet Electric Food Processor with 1.5 cup capacity at our local Walgreens about a month ago for $7.50, Such a deal! It chops, minces and dices food in seconds - to quote the box. It has worked just fine, especially on things like veggie/chicken or beef soup, with pieces cut up rather small. I don't know that I would puree raw veggies with it - I would probably nuke them first so they were a little bit softer. The best thing is how easy it is to clean. Just a quick dip into sudsy water, a swish with my dishrag, and rinse. I also have one of those Braun hand held beaters/blenders which works well - as a back up, incase I burn out the little motor on the Food Processor. You never know! I have been having a soft scrambled egg with added farmers cheese, cottage cheese, spices, for breakfast. I toss it all in the microwave with some skim milk (lots of protein here!) and it's not bad at all. For snacks I have been having unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding, jello, mashed bananas or pears with cottage cheese, etc. For lunch I have been pureeing soups, usually with meat in them. I also cooked a frozen meatloaf dinner and divided it into 3 parts for 3 meals - everything except the corn! Don't want anything to get stuck in tiny places, you know. I don't think I will do that again ( salt content really high!) but I plan to make some meatloaf today, freeze most and puree a piece with some beef broth and maybe pureed cauliflower (that South Beach Diet "fake" mashed potatoes recipe.) I have lots of recipes for smoothies and things like that but I haven't tried them yet. I bought some splenda for sweetening as well. I like to throw low fat cheese into most things, as well as dried milk (like in the meatloaf recipe) for more protein support. I have been able to make the 50 g. of protein every day except one so far, and that was about 40 g. I hope all is well with you and the weather in Florida is better than in WI - lots and lots and lots of rain for all these poor Memorial Day travelers. Take care. Good luck! Nancy
