How many do you get and when? I hate needles and the thought of getting more shots when i already have an IV in just makes me want to squirm around for a minute and scream.

Honey, Please don't waste your time worrying about heparin shots in addition to an IV. Unless they do things MUCH DIFFERENTLY than they teach us in Paramedic class, they are gonna infuse the heparin into the IV line. Now, Doesn't that feel better??

So it can be given IV instead of intramuscular? That would be wonderful!

No the heparin did not go into my IV line... was shot right into my lower abd. I got them the morning of my surgery, along with my IV antibiotics, then more heparin shots that evening and then the next day also.

I got mine twice a day. Sorry but they gave them to me in my belly, real close to the belly button. I was freaking when I heard I needed it in my belly. But!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the needle was very very tiny and I barely felt it. Good luck

I was given only one Heparin shot in either my thigh or mostly my stomach. Only one nurse refused to give it to me in my stomach. She said that it is dangerous when I have had stomach surgery. I will ask my doctor why she was the only one. The last nurse said that it is better obsorbed in the stomach. Don't worry, they did not hurt me, and I know that I am one of the biggest needle cry babies in the world. The shot that I got for throwing up was real bad, it burnt like something terrible.

I was at Emory for surgery on the 10th of this month. And they gave me 3 a day in my upper arm. I still have a bruise from them but they didn't hurt much just a tiney burn that passed really fast. You will be great!!! NAT

Monica, Don't be worried. Everything will be fine. I received my heparin shots like this: 1 right before surgery in the abdomen, 1 the next day and 1 the 3rd day, all in the lower tummy. They did not hurt. That is why Diabetics take their shots in the tummy, it feels like a tiny ***** You will be ok. Relax and look forward to the new you. May God Bless Ann P.
