PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!
Evelyn, Oh my... I cant believe anyone would say those things to you after she had one herself. Most people I talk to say that they would do it again in a heart beat even if there were complications. I am suprised that she did not tell you about the positive things in her life since she had the surgery. I think that we need to pray for her and a better attitude. I am glad that you called the doctor and got things settled there.
I am scheduled to have surgery tomorrow! Oh my! tomorrow! Anyhow I have been on a liquid diet for the past two days and it really hasnt bottered me at all. I think that I am really ready for this. I am having the surgery lap. I will post to you when I get home and let you know how things went.
Stay strong! You have made it through the hard part...Getting Approved!
Huggs and Smiles,
Gerriann surgery scheduled 5/14/04
Evelyn,
One thing I always so is "If God leads you to it...He'll see you through it". That's the first thing I will say.
The second thing is that that woman at that support group needs to be fired immediately!!! That is no way to support people... and scaring them... is just wrong!! I think we are all scared, in some way, shape or form about this surgery... if we weren't we wouldn't be human!! This is a very scary procedure... but NOT having it is even scarier!!! We all know this is the choice we have made to save our lives... And that is exactly what we are doing... we are saving our lives!! You have done research on the surgery, you are well educated and you know how to think for yourself... Do NOT and I repeat DO NOT let that woman or anyone else scare you or make you feel like you are not doing the right thing.
Sometimes I get so scared about my upcoming surgery (May 27th, Lap RNY) that I think maybe I shouldn't do it... then I look in the mirror or think about myself huffing and puffing as I walk up stairs, and I get more scared if I don't have this surgery!! Everything is going to be fine!! This site is the perfect place to be... you've gotten much positive feedback now and you know you are doing the right thing...
Like the others have said, pain is unique to each person. What hurts to one won't to the other... My really good friend had her surgery last year and had it open... she had the morphine drip and she was in a little pain, but it was all well worth it... I'm having my surgery lap ~~ They say that the pain and discomfort are about 1/2 of what it is if you have open... the healing time is also cut in half too... and it all depends on your attitude too... if you believe that it isn't going to be PAIN, it won't be!! Expect some discomfort... but don't dwell on it... If you keep thinking about it, it's only going to make it worse!! Just imagine yourself out of surgery and enjoying some well deserved rest!!
Before you know it, you'll be back on your feet and in that support group letting everyone know that it's fine!! That it isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is and that you survived it all and are on your way to being a "loser"!!
Good luck!!! You will be in my prayers... Keep smiling and remember...
"Worrying doesn't not empty tomorrow of it's troubles~~ It empties today of it's strengths!!"
Aloha,
Loree

As one of those replying said, we each have different pain tolerances. I had my lap roux-en-y on Monday morning & they were going to let me go home on Tues afternoon! I talked them into Wed morning instead. As to the pain, it was never terrible but I availed myself of the PCA (patient controlled analgesic) pump anyway. I wanted to get through the first day or 2 with minimal discomfort - and the hospital staff encouraged that as well. I have only once taken ANYTHING for pain since I came home, not even Tylenol. As I said, everyone is different but don't be scared off by one person's experience... My prayers are with you...
Evelyn,
Pleasd don't let this woman scare you. She sounds like a real jerk!! I had the lap done on May 5th, with no complications, got home on friday, spent saturday at a baseball field for opening day with my sons, and have walked every day, leading up to 2.2 miles that I did on Wednesday, and went back to work today. I haven't had the experience of open, but I would definitly say lap did me no harm!! Good luck, and keep your chin up. Have a wonderful day. Dawn
