pre-op cheating
help!! i keep cheating on this pre-op diet. i'm supposed to be eating a small breakfast and having a myocel drink for lunch, 3 oz lean meat and half a cup of green vegtables for dinner followed by another myocel. who were they kidding??? if i could do that i wouldn't need the lap band surgery. this has been day 4 and i have cheated every day so far
I understand completely how you feel. I have friends who have had surgery and had no pre-op diet at all. They just ate whatever. Well, my doctor is really strict about your pre-op diet also. I am supposed to be eating no white carbs, 30 minute meals w/protein first, vegtables, then fruit. I'm really doing so so. I have slipped up a little and had some white carbs. Not much, but I am afraid that I'm going to blow the tool if I can't stick to the rules now. But, I'm in a strange position. I am right at the cut-off; BMI is 40. So, I can't gain any or lose any. I have to cut out those carbs without taking off any weight.
So, I feel your pain and frustration. But, just hang in there. We'll make it to the other side.

You will be cheating yourself if you don't follow your surgeons directions. The purpose of the diet is to shrink your liver so that it is easier for your surgeon to operate. Personally, I would rather have a happy surgeon and do everything I can in order to make this surgery safer. Please think twice about cheating again. I am preop and it is tough for me also. My surgery is May 10th. Good luck to you.
Linda,
You have to try your best to stay on the diet. It is very important that you shrink your liver so that the procedure can be performed laproscopic. Also, this is a good time to get used the way you will be eating for the rest of your life. I know it is difficult. I have been on a liquid diet for 4 weeks now. As my surgery date is gettng closer it is getting easier. I have lost 18lbs. My stomach is shrinking i guess because I am not hungry. I have also, dropped my body fat by 2%. So that means I have gained 2% more muscle fat burning mass! My doc wanted me to lose 15 lbs before surgery to make sure that I could lose the weight and that I could stick to the program. If I couldnt do it now I may not have been able to do it after surgery. Remember, the surgery is just a tool.
Also, I wouldn't worry about losing too much weight and dropping your BMI. If you are already approved for surgery they (your insurance or your doctor) will not cancel you because your BMI has dropped.
