Has anyone had RNY Open? I was suppose to have lap but because of previous surgeries, hysterectomy, hernia etc. have to have open. Everyone is having it lap so wondering if someone can tell me about their journey open?

Hi Sandy, You and I are having surgery on the same date. And we are both having Open RNY for the same reason, to many previous surgeries. All the people on this list are like us, waiting to have their surgeries in MAY . I think you would need to go to the main board to ask your question. What I have learned from the support list for my state is that Open RNY is safer as far as infection and leaks go. We may end up with one 4 to 6 inch scar as to LAP having 4 to 5, 1 to 2 inch scars. I had my Gallbladder removed a few years ago and they did it Lap. I have 3 - 2 inch scars an one 3 inch scar. Plus the big one from having a Hysterectomy. I'm hoping that a Tummy Tuck a year from now will take care of them . Good luck on your Surgery on May 12. We will be walking the hospital Halls together, just different hospitals. Jean

Thanks for your reply Jean. I am glad to have someone who can feel the same things I am. I will be thinking about you when I am awake enough from anesthesia. I have sleep apnea so will be in ICU for the first night. I weigh 238 right now but have so many comobidities that my insurance approved quickly. I also work for the doctor who will be doing my surgery and I have been watching him for 13 years perform these but really want a patient's prospective on the open procedure. He was so funny the day he realize I had had so many surgeries and he would have to do open, he came back from surgery and said we have to talk and he change to the doctor person and I could tell he hated to tell me this so bad but his words were so soothing. Little did he know that I already knew he was going to tell me this and I had already had my tear jerker and gotten over it. He did his other secretaries daughter lap and had to convert to open because she had an arterial bleed. This surgery probably save her life because this could have bleed out when she had a baby or wreck or anything and someone else might not have reacted as quickly as he did. Thanks again and I will keep you in my prayers. Sandy
