I am actually coming up on 6weeks post op, still with various aches and pains, but every day is a new revelation and it gets better and better. And...you are right. This is NOT a fad, it is now part of our lives, and we will have it forever! That is such a wonderful realization! Thank you for the reminder! Z

You are right, and maybe next time she starts preaching remind her of that, and that your doctor knows what works for his patients.  I have to keep reminding myself of that as I am on liquids for two weeks after surgery, where some who have had RNY are already on soft foods, ohh how I wish I could have, but I keep reminding myself, this is what my doctor said to do.

Topic: RANT: SURGERY COMPARISONS
So a friend and co-worker of mine had surgery 1 month before almost to the day... She is full of advice and comments and it's annoying (and this is my 1st day back to work). I avoid the subject cuz I dont want to talk about surgery all the time anyhow (who does) but I definitely dont want to hear how I'm "not supposed to have that" when I say I had pureed veggies and fruit (my surgeon says it's ok, hers said not till week 3). And then she procedes to tell me how she ate an entire piece of garlic bread yesterday and then threw up and there was blood in it (and you're giving me advice?!)...

It's important that we keep in mind that different surgeons have different requirements. In my personal experience, Kaiser seems to be the most different. I've heard of a cream soup strained diet for a week after surgery, crushed up crackers, and other things that my nutritionist said were no-nos. I keep telling her, "that's Kaiser, but I'm Blue Cross." Not only that, my surgeon is very well known in my area and praised and has only had 1 death (post surgery and was caused by vitamin deficiency and blood clot) over his thousands of surgeries performed. Im confident with his abilities and with his suggestions and requirements. After all, he did my husband's RNY 2 yrs ago and he's never had an issue.

Guess I just needed to vent to someone who understands!

Every surgeon seems to be a little different. My surgeon and nutritionist said absolutely no cream soups because of the carb content. I was on clear liquids (chicken broth, crystal light , jello) only for the day before surgery and 1 wk after. Then graduated to puree...

For the hospital all I needed was :
toothbrush and toothpaste
deodorant
cell charger
couple magazines
lip balm! I was also very chapped after surgery
comb/ponytail holder and hat for the way home (wore a hat in, i do not have wash and go hair! lol)

I wore a comfortable outfit in and the same one home... I was fine walking around in the gowns and slipper socks they gave me. They also gave me a little care package with toiletries anyway, but I didnt use them.

Grats on everything going well, I was sooo relieved when they took my drain(tether) out.  Now if I can make it to Friday when I can start having soft foods.  And yes it feels like I constantly am sipping, sipping, sipping trying to get everything in.

I have kids and im glad my husband was off with me to help out.   I dont know what id do without him.  I think overall the experience is a little weird.  I know what to expect so it made it a little easier.   But it is still a big change.  Trying to get in my fluids has been a challenge.  Like trying to drink when not thirsty and then trying to drink about 1 hr after eating.  But i know why i did this and i keep that in mind everyday.

Topic: Surgery April 27th 2010
My RNY is scheduled for this Tuesday.  I'm an emotional basket case.  I hate to be so blunt.  Makes me crazy to think about...  I'm trying to remain calm. However; it's not working very well.. I don't want to talk to my family and friends about it because I don't want them to worry about me any more than they already are.  I'm really not normally such a worry wart... This emotional rollercoaster has just been a trip. I will be happy when it's all over.  I have a 3 year old grand daughter that is my life and I want to spend many more years with her.......

I too, am a bit easy to distract Kim :), our tales are similar, bruises on the hands and arms, I only have 4 incisions and a drain, but outside of the muscular pain in the one side of my abdomen, I feel pretty good.  Tired, tired, tired though... might as well get the sleep while I can.

Staples and drain out tomorrow morning, then on to soft, pureed foods.  Didn't really gain any weight in the hospital, but haven't really lost any either.  Right this second as previously mentioned by Kim, it only concerns me for about a half hour then I drift off to something else.  LOL

The one thing I do know....the hunger I was having on liquids before surgery does not exist any more.  I don't think I could even imagine eating yet.

I have made my protein goal last 2 days, but overall liquid goal ....falling way short, by about 20 oz.
It is so hard with being tired, napping, and just resting to even think about it and the day is not long enough to sip that much, but I keep trying. Who knew it would take so much conscious effort just to sip all day !!

Good luck to those still to go this month, it will be over before you know it.
