Topic: your tastes really do change...
So far almost everything I am trying to get my protein in has tasted gross. I loved the shakes and stuff preop. I saved samples of all kinds of stuff to try and have yet to get something even palatable. I feel like my smell has elevated 10 fold! I went to try a CIB this morning and gaged from just the smell! I have gotten in my vitamins today and I am doing better with my water as well b ut this protein thing is gonna kick my ass! I don't know if there is anyway to do it this early out without the protein shakes of nectar etc. I bought some special k protein water and then I will try that next. I know ill get it soon but I thought the protein part would be no problem. Yeah right! Even yogart and pudding tastes gross right now!
Topic: make room on the loosers bench - im home!
Hey all! I have to first say I have missed ALL of you. I bought a new computer with my bonus and hubby tried to be nice and hook em both up to the internet so I could start using em as soon as I got home (he knows how addicted I am to OH) well he is not that computer savvy and now neither computer is accessing the internet. Grrr... Thank goodness for blackberry. I'm not crawling around to fix it in this state so I've called in dad for back up on monday!
So for the most part surgery was uneventful... Some things unexpected... Walking into the OR if you have never been before is scary as hell. But they slipped me a nice ****tail to take the edge off. In recovery I felt like all I wanted to do was sleep. Couldn't keep my eyes open. turns out that morphine makes me EXTREAMLY tired. I was allowed a nurse to give me a shot of morphine every 4 hrs so I set my alarm to it. Every morphine shot would make me nauseous and gaggy for about 15 min but was well worth the releif it brought! If you have a low pain tolerance like me I would ask when they are gonna do your exrays and barium swallow. I was wisked away before my pain med came up from pharmacy and so I felt like I was on a torture table! It is definatly not easy to lay flat out (I still am sleeping elevated) and they had me laying on this table all streatched out for an hour with no main meds. Then it is a teaching hospital so I think that's why it took so long cause everything was explained (I guess good for me to cause I got to hear what they were looking at) I don't think the radiology guys quite understand gastric bypass cause the are like drink more, drink more... Till I said maybe you should call and ask someone just how big my stomach is now since you obviously can't see it on the screen) I don't think the student ment any harm but but beware of this crazy when she's in pain.the second day the nurse helps me to get out of bed and guess who stopped for a visit? Dear old AF! Horrible when you have a catheder. Removing the jacksonpratt drian hurt like a ***** it felt like they were rippin my guts out. I also have to speak to my surgeon, there are so many more people opting for banding now that I noticed the liquid diet wasn't quite for RNY. There were some full sugar juices and italian ice served to me that of course I didn't eat (make sure you look) Thank god for the nurses who forced me to walk cause that was the last thing I felt like doing. I did get one of those cool bariatric beds that turn into a chair. Pretty cool! I am home now and moving around more every day. I have noticed that one of my veins by where they had the iv in is swollen. Also one of my incisions looks like it might be getting infected, it looks kinda goopy. So anywhay I know that this is a lot of negativity but please take it with a grain of salt. I AM A WIMP! Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I'm struggling but it is a battle I will win! Good luck to those who are up next! Best wishes
Tami

Me too! I'm Keren, and I will be having a gastric bypass (RNY) on April 21st in Burbank, CA. Just posted my very first blog entry about my first week with the liquid pre-op diet, check it out!
Would love to befriend folks with surgery dates close to mine for mutual support and advice. (or just anyone cool, really).

Wow.. great post! I have so many things to say back to this! lol...
First of all EIGHT WEEKS PRIOR!?!? OMG.. I would have strangled my surgeon! I mean, granted that afterward we're going to be very limited on intake and have to do a liquid diet briefly anyhow, but at that point our bodies will have been adjusted to be able to handle it mentally (ie: lack of hunger). That's just shocking and I'm glad you sent them condolences.. lol
I TOO have been getting the "last supper" syndrome, and I completely empathize with you on this one. I told myself "ahhh piece of cake.. I'm NOT going to do that!" and there I was running off to eat my favorite Chinese food dish the other day. Not to mention a few other indiscretions that I won't go into.. the holiday being this weekend doesn't help me either.. lol.. just another excuse (Easter brunch.. doh!). As I mentioned in my recent blog, I almost WISH that my surgeon would have put me on a mandatory 2 week pre-op liquid diet.. this just gives me too much freedom to have "last supper" excuses.. I've heard that soda is a hard one to give up when you're addicted, so I wish you the best with that... I'm sure you'll do fine though. I have a friend who slowly transitioned over to diet /caffeine free by mixing the two together and slowly blending the regular soda out of the mix.. that got her off the sugar/caffeine addiction... I had a bit of a coffee addiction, but I transitioned over to caffeine free pretty easily.. I was lucky I guess.
Lastly, I'm getting the anxiousness kicking in now too.. sleepless nights even though I feel like I'm mentally ok... lol. I'm sure we'll be just FINE.. and just like you said.. we have so much to look forward to and be grateful for.. so many people don't take the opportunity to have a second chance at life.. we are ALL truly fortunate!
Congrats on your upcoming date and keep in touch, would be great to see how you're moving along since our dates are the same!!!

Topic: RE: How important is it to diet before the op ?
I know it is hard. My surgeon has his patients do a 2 week protien shake diet so that our liver shrinks and surgery is easier for him and safer for us. He will and has gone in and found that someone hasn't stuck to the diet and pulled the instruments out without doing the surgery. I've made it 12 days so far, surgery is Monday April 13. So it is best if you can diet before surgery, it's aldo very nice to see those pounds off.
