Bad diarrhea, PLEASE HELP

Ok, I have a question about bad diarrhea on the pre-surgery diet. I started it yesterday and I have had really bad diarrhea every since. Does any one know what would cause it or maybe how long it might last? I can not even leave the house. I know that is TMI...

I would like any feed back on this matter.

I am eating 4 protein shakes a day, 1 yogurt, 1 applesauce, 1 V-8 juice, oatmeal and my liquids. Rhonda

The answer for the most part is liquid in= liquid out.  Since the bulk of your diet is liquid, that's what's going to come out.  Pretty normal and won't get much better until you are off that diet.  I am going through the same thing, although I am only allowed clear liquids for 2 days (broth, jello and popsicles).  Good luck on your surgery!

try switching one item at a time, I dont usually have a problem with SF stuff,,, but the SF jello i guess in addition to all other liquids and not much else spelled disaster for me. IT WAS HORRIBLE! i sympithise with you. I manage a home depot and the bathroom is on one side not in the middle so it was terrible. It was not even diarrhea, it was water. (tmi) Once i figured it out, it wasnt completly gone but was soooo much better. My suggestion would be to try the applesauce first and sub something else. (applesauce is a no no for my kid as this gives him a definate case of the bubble guts) Another thing you might want to consider is how much milk were you consuming before the liquid diet phase? before i started the liuid diet my surgeon explained that the protein that we are drinking is from milk. Even if you are not lactose intollerant drinking so muck milk products is like a shock to your body and takes some getting used to. maybe try a soy protein for the day and if that works gradually trade one for a whey protein every day. I heart milk and drink it always so i knew this wasnt the problem for me. Best wishes on your upcomming surgery! Hopefully you will figure this thing out cause stuck at home is not fun....

Thank you, I thought I would give it today and see how it does. I have had crystal light, oatmeal and 1 EAS protein drink ank I just finished the drink and my stonach is already girgleing. I thought I would try the soy.

My pre-op diet calls for 3 protein shakes per day and water.  Nothing else.  I am starving, but I have had no issues with diarreah (sp?).  I have been on the diet for 2 days now.

My surgery is scheduled for April 28.  I have overcome the hunger for the most part....I really don't think much about food anymore.  I do have the problem with the runny stools though...like water really.  It started the day after I responded to your post.  I think I jinxed myself!!

Rhonda -

Are you chewing SF gum or using SF mints or hard candy of any kind?  The sugar alcohol that is used to sweeten them is a laxative, so you really have to be careful with them.  Aspartame (Equal) or Sucralose (Splenda) don't usually have that side effect.

I used SlimFast for my protein shakes and they each have 5 grams of fiber which I think helped me to not have diarrhea.

Hope you're doing better!
