Topic: RE: Newbie with a Monday surgery date
I'm new to this too. Had my RNY on 4/22 and today is my 1st post-op visit. I too had the feeling and was told by some that I wasn't big enough for this! I'm about 40 BMI too. I say that only the person themselves knows how they feel and what they can and can't do physically. Go with your heart and gut and with what your medical professionals say and forget about the sabotagers and/or those who love you too much and loose perspective. Generally most well thought out people know what's best for them. Good luck and wishing you improved health on your journey!

Hi Lisa, I'm Sandy from NY and I had RNY on 4/22. So sorry for your complications, but glad that things are looking up for you now! I'm still feeling hungry too! I have my 1st post-op visit today, so I'll ask about it but I had the same thought as you - what if my pouch is too big or something. I've been on liquids and pudding/yogurt only so far and have been following it without "cheating" at all because I'm petrified of screwing something up, but I still feel hungry most of the time. I do think from the education that I was given that it's okay to feel hungry and eat small amounts every few hours b/c the pouch is so much smaller. I too have been stoping myself at 1/2 to 1 cup of shake, pudding, yogurt, etc - have not felt too full or sick but I have not pushed it. Somewhere once I read that it takes 21 days to form a habit, so maybe it will take 21 days not to feel hungry too??!!
Topic: RE: Looking for advice
I believe it was from a website from a Bariatric surgeon in Idaho. I could try to find the paper, but it may take me awhile because I am preparing for finals for nursing school. I typed in google, "lap band vs. gastric bypass" and found a lot of info. I also have a friend who just had rny and her doctor told her that initially (the first 3 months) there can be more complications with rny, but longterm there are more complications with the band because of slippage and I think other reasons. Sorry, this post doesn't seem very scientifically backed, but I did research it. you should definitely research it more too. Don't depend on what I say. My biggest question in making this decision for myself is what are the long, long term results of those who have rny. 20+ years down the road as far as nutrient absorption, electrolyte imbalance. If anyone knows about this I would be interested. I'm pretty confident that in the short term 10-20 years it is positive, but I'm wondering how this will effect me when I'm post surgery a lot of years.
Topic: I am Hungary! What if it didn't work for me?
Hi everyone. I had my surgery RNY on 4/15. It went well fast atually, but then i had emergency surgery within a few hours because of a bleed. I had two major surgeries within 8 hours and it was nightmarish. Well i was in the icu for 3 days and then in the reg hosp room for 2 more. I am getting better everyday and don't have much pain at all now. My problem is that I still feel like I am hungary. I am really trying to follow the rules of the post op diet, but I think I have cheated a bit. For example, I can eat a whole cup of lentil soup (not pureed). I seem to be able to eat a cup of stuff without anypain. Is this normal? I had malto-meal for breakfast. Is that ok? I am supposed to doing 2 weeks of pureed foods but the thought of it makes me gag. I haven't had any nausea problems with anything that i hve had. I dont feel like I get full. I stop myself at a cup but it just seems like i could eat more. I do feel satisfied somewhat when I have lentil soup for example but I seem to be hungary a couple hours later. I don't know if I am confused or what? Anyone have any similar stories or some advice on what is ok to eat?
Topic: RE: Getting nervous!
Thank you for your encouraging words. Look at me! I was banded this morning, and I am home already..on the computer. I haven't taken any pain meds yet, but I am dealing with this gas pain. Warm drinks seem to work better than the popcicles. But I have to tell you, I have the best tasting 10 cal sugar free/fat free popcicle in the world! Got them from Sams's--that's what they gave me in the hospital, and I had to have more!
My husband has been absolutely great! He has been at my side all day, and I think it was just nerves. He assured me he was in my corner and plans to stay there!
The hospital was great! everyone was soooo nice. They were very informative to. I plan to attend the support groups to learn as much as I can locally. I was weird being the patient, but it was also a humbling experience.
Thanks again for the help. I gave myself a time limit on the computer, and I'm almost there. I think I'll walk around the house of a few minutes, then get back in bed!
Good luck to all those future Bandsters!!

Topic: RNY after Nissen fundoplication??
Has anyone on here had RNY that has had a fundoplication previously? I had a fundoplication in 1997 at MGH for an incarcerated hiatal hernia. I was scheduled for RNY at Mass General Hospital in 2005 with Sheldon Randall, MD but it was canceled because I did not have the $1000 that MGH charged that my insurance at the time wouldnt cover. I am not going to see him on June 2nd at Lawrence Memorial in Medford. The doctor at MGH (Rattner) who performed my fundoplication told me that he would be the best surgeon for me having had that fundoplication as it makes the RNY much more complicated.

Topic: RE: Had surgery on Yesterday 4/25
Hi! Congratulations to you. I had mine done on the 21st. I am seven days out and I feel really terrific. I really started feeling better like a normal person on the 25th so give it a few days. Rest rest rest and walk walk walk and then make sure to sip your water. I have a hard time staying down and making sure I get better so really make sure you take good care of yourself.
