You know I had my surgery the 29th also, it was suppose to be the 25th but I made a big mistake I was there and they were fixin to put in the Ive and the anesthesiologist came in and asked what meds I took in the morning and I was so tired worrying over the surgery that I told them I took my glucophage for sugar control then I became brain dead I couldn't remember if I took it or not... well surgery cancelled.... said that the glucophage can cause some major problems with the surgery in rare cases so we did not want to take the chance... luckily he rescheduled me for Tuesday. So we had our surgery together...... I'm with you no desire to eat.... lol.. great isn't it... I do have one question to ask you.. have you weighed yet????? I weigh every day. also when I came home I rushed to the scale and guess what I GAINED 12 LBS from the hospital last couple of mornings still no change.....I can't believe it and my calories have been under 700 a day...I hope I am not going to be one of their medical mysteries........ Yep that side thing is a kicker.. I am not a back person either so I too have problems.. thank you for your response keep in touch.... hugs and blessings to you also... sandy

Hi Laura, Congratulations....I'm so glad you are feeling and doing so well. I had my surgery on April 28th. Today I started the full liquid diet where I can finally have protein shakes, cream soups (without lumps) s/f pudding and fudgesicles... I think I am doing great. I've been very shocked at how good I feel and how NOT HUNGRY I am. It is amazing. I have lost 16 pounds since surgery. WOW. That is 16 pounds in 1 week. I have lost 27 pounds since April 15th, when I started my Pre-op. Unbelievable. I would say things are going great. I love my RYN!!! Cyndi

I don't seem to have too much success with forums. I've posted a couple of times with no reply, which is sure understandable with how busy everyone is getting ready for surgeries, etc. I just thought I would post an abnormal surgery on here, so if anyone else has one like mine they will not be alarmed. I'm really happy for all of you who had smooth surgeries. First of all, would I do it again? Absolutely - without question - 100%. This was the sixth operation in my life. Everyone always commented on how tough I am, how quickly I heal, and on and on. This was my first laparoscopic surgery. I thought this would be a walk in the park, LOL. Surgery weight, 267. I have no co-morbid conditions, no diabetes, no hypertension, no aches, pains, etc. I am fat, but saw the scale continue to climb and knew I was headed for disaster. It took four years and an act of God to get the money to do this. Life was miserable, very sedentary and sad. Finally, I pulled the money together, was approved and ready for surgery. Surgery day, 4-28-08. The nurses were absolutely fabulous at MMH. They deserve awards for their compassion. Surgery was at 8:45 a.m., and I remember seeing the recovery room clock showing about 11:30. The nurse told me I had major hypertension and that it needed to come down before leaving the room. After leaving the room is when the gas pains began, shooting into my arms, shoulders, neck, all over my torso, down my abdomen, some in my legs. I tried and tried to walk it out. All i could do was moan and groan, bend over chairs, change positions. I'm told this is normal and they gave me morphine. Hours passed before the pain was under control enough (they were talking about admitting me - no way). I was home and every few minutes, the pains would start again. I walked, moved, laid, writhed in pain, took Gas-X, chewed Rolaids, drank water, took pain medicine, Zantac, and followed every suggestion to the T. I could only handle sips of water. Every few minutes I felt totally dehydrated, mouth so parched i couldn't talk, Gas-X made me gag unless i took with water. Late night on day two I started feeling somewhat human again. I made it to the potty without holding onto walls and furniture. My pee was orange, not too pretty smelling and not much of it. I didn't realize I had to pee either, and reaching to wipe was a monumental task, as I am right-handed. I slept in a recliner with various pillows, blankets, phone and drugs by my side. I had water all day, just sips, tried a popsicle and a little broth, but only water tasted good. My husband was a saint. Day three went a lot more smoothly. I spent the day walking, sleeping, doing my drug routine, taking good care of myself, tried some high protein Slim-Fast, yick, but drank it over the course of 8 hours, lots of water, some broth and another half popsicle. Gas pains popped up here and there, but managed to find comfortable positions or walk it out. Days four and five went much the same as three. I felt my strength returning, wishing for my bed and having little tinges of hunger, only to discover that it didn't take much to fill the gap and go back to water. Its Monday and I worked today. Luckily, I work at home on my computer. I couldn't have done it otherwise. I now feel as if I have an alien living under my right boob (I guess no big deal because at one time I actually considered the mythological tapeworm diet). This is a bulge that is bulging more and more as time goes by, which the nurse tells me is also normal and might eventually look like a baseball protruding out until it finally goes down in about 8 weeks. My belly looks like it was smacked with a baseball bat about twenty times, a dark brown bruise covering about 80% of my belly. It is now 2:00 p.m., 5-5-08, and I have about an hour and a half to go on my day before I can collapse into my chair and doze off to oblivion. I have not had a fill, obviously, and my appetite is not there right now, so in my book, a success for now. It felt good to eat a half a popsicle and throw the rest away instead of demolishing half a box and still wanting more, to leave some broth in the cup rather than greedily drink it as fast as possible. Just like an alcoholic, i am going to take one day at a time and look at each and every moment of this as a blessing and an opportunity to have a better life. Again, I wanted to share a non-smooth surgery story so anyone who doesn't zoom through this with flying colors knows they are not alone, it shall pass, and I would love to share successes along the way any time, any hour. Thanks for your time, Chris

i am glad to hear you are doing so well. I had my surgery last tuesday and things are going well. I am still uncomfortable but i can get up and down and move around. the gas pains are all gone now and the hardest thing for me seems to be making myself eat. i have yet to get hungry. even though the taste of my shakes and puddings ect do not bother me, its the thought of actually eating them that does. first day home i got in about 40 grams of protein, but yesterday i didnt get in any more than about 20 because i slept alot. I am not having pain so much as discomfort, just around the top left incision where most of the work was done. It feels almost like a pulled muscle and it is very irritating. Dr said it is normal, that is where most of the work was done. Still I am a very active person and do not like to not just get up and go do what i want to. i am trying to do walking but you can only do so much in a five room apt lol. i too am sleeping out on the cough because i can prop myself up in the corner and be more comfortable. i made the mistake of trying to lie on my side last night, lasted about 10 seconds lol, then i had to roll back over. i am NOT a back sleeper, so this is tough on me. all in time, a day at a time, little better each day. hope you keep doing awesome. best of luck with your recovery. hugs and blessings erin

Hi Everyone I am home, 5 days since surgery........ Everything went so good at the hospital, my gastric bypass went so well, I was not in as much pain as I thought I was, I too was up and walking within a few hours, not as far as half hour but around the hospital's fifth floor square. I too had bad gas pains. I have found that my favorite protein powder is the non-flavored and I have tasted the strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, I use the non-flavored in my skim milk and then add sugar-free coffee syrups or no sugar added neslies quick. This is working the best for me, I had my first day eating at home and I got in 69 grams of protein. I got the sugar-free hunts snack-pack pudding in chocolate and added a whole scoop of protein powder and 1/4 cup of skim milk and stired it til runny smooth and boy I loved that and the protein was a kicker. Told my husband at the end of day this is going to be a piece of cake... I will probably EAT my words tomorrow, but today was great. I only got in 38 oz of water but I feel that it was ok for now... every day gets a little better as far as pain goes, I am sleeping in my recliner for now because I have a water bed and I don't want to tackle getting in and out of there yet. The only real problem I had was when I was in the hospital bed I was so tired of sleeping on my back that I turned over on my side, had a happy moment of all of about 10 minutes then I had to turn back over.. since I am on the way heavier side this took awhile and I then did have to call the nurse in for my pain pills even though it was 30 minutes to soon.. so my mental note was not to turn over on my side ANYMORE at least until I am more healed... well best go to bed myself, bye talk to you guys later..

I just had RNY 4 days ago. I had also done research on both and I finally decided to go with the doctor I felt the most comfortable with. He, though did not do lapband and explain in extensive details why he never would. So, that really "made" my choice for me. While in recovery I had a sweet nurse who came to talk to me a lot (proably said more than she should) and she was getting RNY in a few months. She said she was on the fence about which one to do, but after working on the Bariatric unit, she said she saw way more patients come in for problems/reversals/etc. for Lap Band than RNY and she was convinced to go RNY. I am not a "Pro-RNY" or anything I just wanted to tell you the experience I had with her. I really felt a lot better with my decision after talking with her. But, the choice is personal and I think whatever anyone decides to do that can change their life for the good, is a great thing!! Hope that helps! Lisa

Well, I had my surgery 3 days ago and am home now. I am amazed at how the feeling of hunger is gone. My stomach is rolling like crazy. I guess a lot of it has to do wih the gas they put in you. It kind of hurts but it's a wierd feeling. I am taking it a day at a time and haven't really had much to eat yet except a little broth and some potato soup. I tried carnation instant breakfast this morning but it set a little heavy but I think it's because I didn't get the sugar free kind. I have the sf kind now. Any one have any advice on diet progression?
