Topic: RE: Wife had RNY on 4/15
I had a RNY on April 29. My instructions are: Full liquid diet, 10-14 days post surgery (no concentrated sweets, use sugar free beverages, cut full strength fruit juice with water) , followed by pureed diet for days 14-28. Soft diet for the 4 weeks following that, and regular diet as tolerated (low sugar, low fat) at two months. From the time I got home from the hospital, the goal is a minimum of 60 grams of protein daily. Usually, this means drinking protein shakes/meal replacements, or adding protein powder to allowed foods. The other requirement has been 48-64 oz of water every single day. It is hard to follow, but really necessary in order to allow internal healing. I must also take a specific vitamin/mineral regimen every single day, as well as actigall to prevent gallstones, and Prilosec for my stomach. I too have a heavy spouse, and yes, I think I have put undue pressure on him to diet with me. He likes Optifast, so I have been encouraging him to suffer along with me...at least he'll have company. I think after seeing what I am going through with this open RNY, he will never consider having the surgery! My polite suggestion to you is to review the diet given to your wife with her. If she seems reluctant to follow, maybe call the doctor for an appointment or call the dietitician or nutritionist to see her. I think she might need a pep talk from the surgeon and nutritionist. A lot of this hunger is real, as our bodies start receiving signals again, but some of it is leftover "head hunger". I am trying really hard not to fall off the horse this early out...but it takes real perserverance and of course support to achieve this. Good Luck!

Topic: Hi everyone....I am ...
Hi everyone....I am Karen and I am in New Jersey. I got banded on April 16th. It was no problem except 3 days of severe gas pains. Today I went to the dr. and I have lost 13 lbs. The fill I got last week of 3cc's really gives me little or no restriction. I lost these pounds through diet.....not banding. The dr. will give me another adjustment on May 29th. Till then I would love how to use this site....how to create a profile....pic, etc. I guess I have to wait till my daughter comes home from college so she can show me how.....I am so happy that I found all of you.....I feel like family.

Hi all I had the lap band on 4-23-08. I am so happy. I have lost 26 pounds, and already feel a difference in my hips adn joints. I did not think 26 pounds meant that much. I started soft food yesterday with a soft boiled egg. Wow was full all day!! Today I have had boiled potatoes and cottage cheese. Filling and finally tasteful. Does anyone have good soft food meals to share? Good luck to all. Lesa

We are in S. Florida, and she had it don at the Cleaveland Clinic. She is not computer literate, so I am posting after being referred here from a completely unrelated board (karoke hosts). She is having trouble adjusting to the diet, and finds she goes from hunger to pain- skipping the full feeling no matter how slow she eats. She also has not followed the mush/liquid part of the diet, insiting if she chews real well it is the same thing..... The spouse/family member section of this board is a little slow, so I figured I would come over here. Would love to hear from other people that are on the same timeline, and/or their spouses. Also, this is for the spouses/sig others, if you are heavy too, have you noticed a sudden push for you to diet with and/or go for the same surgery? Just curious....

RNY on 4/16. No vomiting, no pain, lots of energy. No issue other than I havent gotten enough water in the last two days. Put big signs all over my desk and classroom to remind me. Down about 15 pounds post op. I am thinking this is a bit low for 3 weeks out with a starting BMI if 42. Anyone else willing to share their numbers? (Please skip the comparision lectures... I get it!) Just curious about others progress.

My high was 365lbs... I was down to 333lbs at the time of surgery. I weighed in at 313lbs one week after surgery. That's 20lbs in 1 week! I am totally excited to see how my body changes over the next year or so.

I am also glad you shared your story. There needs to be these storied out there so people will know a) what they are getting into when going into the surgery and b) they are normal if things like this happen to them after the surgery. I actually hope there is not too many people who will experience what you had to go through. I imagine you must be a very tough person for dealing with it all. I am a week post-op from RNY (Lap) and only had mild gas and no gas pain. I am recovering pretty well, although I like to complain about my minor aches and pains Now I see I should just suck it up and realize that others had a much worse go of it. Hang in there!! It will get better, it has to right??? Lisa

Topic: 7 Days Past
One week ago today I had the Lapband procedure. There were no complications and evrything is going well now. My only intake is water, bottled lipton teas, a little chicken broth (beef broth tastes nasty..even before the op) and different brands of shakes. The weight is comming off daily. Two weeks pre-op I weighed 339. I started the liquid diet (cheated just a little). On the day of the procedure I was at 325. This morning, 7 days later, I'm at 311. It's been a few years since I've been at this weight. I'm looking forward to dropping a lot more. I'm looking for some other ideas for the 2 week post-op liquid diet. I'm worried about having excess skin hanging in the mid-section. I'm not a couch potato and I'm goin to step up my physical activities. At age 53 I know my body wont shrink like it would if I were younger. Does anyone have some advice on this area?

Chris I am so sorry that your surgery and recovery has been a little rough! You have a great attitude by taking one day at a time though. Good for you! I also had surgery April 28th, but i had the Lap RNY, sounds like you had the band done. I would say for me the worst part was also the gas pain. It was terrible!! Otherwise I am doing ok, like you, taking each day at a time. Good luck to you and thanks for sharing your story!!!

I had my banding on 4/23, still on CIB, broth and jello until my first post-op visit day after tomorrow. Hope to be given green light to move to stage 3 diet and actually add something I can chew. I think I have lost a lot these two weeks, plus I lost some pre-op. (My scale at home is not consistent.) Clothes are looser and people say they can see it in my face! I had to find a belt, otherwise I would be in trouble with KEYS in my pocket! The downside is the hunger before I eat and the stomach pains after. I am taking the liquids VERY slowly so am perplexed at this reaction. By the time the stomach pains subside I am hungry again! (As in feeling weak and dizzy hungry.) Anyone having caffeine withdrawal? How are you dealing with it? I have not had coffee since the day before surgery, and have had only tea (hot or iced) in small amounts since then. The headaches are killer, even though I am staying hydrated. Anyone having just a tablespoon to half-cup of coffee just to kick-start the day? -mum (Alice)
