Hi this is Kathy and I have started my pre-op diet. My surgery is the 29th. I went to little or no carbs as of Saturday. I am starving! I still have a big stomach, and just protein is not filling it up. I have been starting my day with a protein shake and adding a few fresh strawberries and some Dannons FF-SF yogurt. I did not realize how addicted to carbs I am. Last night I had a hamburger patty and lots of broccoli and that satisfied my for a little while but it has been the only thing. This is hard....any ideas?? Thanks, Kathy

you didnt hear it from me and some people may think this is bad advise, however after abt two weeks trying to do the right thing before my surgery i talked to several people i knw that had the surgery they said the heck with it eat what you want in moderatin, because after the surgery you have no choice, so i did i am 8 weeks out have lost 36 pounds very happy. i would suggest start walking or putting in some frm of excersise and get more used to that it will be easy not to eat. god bless

please be careful!! I know a woman who did not follow liquid diet advice and when they did swallowing test in hospital she aspirated and woke up from her coma 4 months later!! She has had problems ever since Don't want to scare you but do want you to be aware there are risks to not following dr's orders

Hi Kathy, I have been dieting too. I have to do 3 months of diet and exercise just to get approval for my surgery. I know this isn't the same as your diet but when I feel hungery I first drink water. Then I wait 10 minutes. Sometimes when we think we are hunger we are really dehydrated. Another thing that helps me is to exercise. Walking works wonders. and as the other person told you in her reply it is a good thing to used to pre op because it improves weight loss post op. Exercise has also elevated my mood. I am a very moody person but since I have started exercising regularly I am much happier and not as hungery. Take care hope this helps. Tedi

I just started mine too. My surgery is the 28th. The last day before I started I basically said goodbye to the things that I love. I knew that day was coming so I ate some of the things I knew would be gone forever. Then I was ready. Now I am so excited about my surgery that it is not really bothering me. I have been keeping myself busy cleaning my house and getting things in order (sort of like nesting....) It has kept my mind off of food and it has made me feel good to see the results of my cleaning. I know that I won't be able to clean good for a few weeks once I have surgery... So, I will be able to recover in a nice spotless house. Just try to occupy your mind with positive things. I have always tried to remember this motto...."nothing tastes as good as thin feels".....Soon we both will know what thin feels like. Keep that vision. Good luck. Let's keep in touch so we can support each other. Cyndi

Hi Kathy, my surgery is the 30th so I start preop diet tomorrow. I'm very nervous about it cuz I'm afraid I'm going to be hungry. I KNOW I am a carb addict. Let me know if you find some things that help. Let's support each other with surgery dates so close. Debbie

Hello! My surgery is also the 30th, for Lap-Band and this post is the first I've heard about a "2-week pre-op diet." I'm shocked. My surgeon has never mentioned it. I guess effective immediately, no carbs. But what else is everyone doing/not doing as part of the prep?? Please give any advice/suggestions. Thanks a bunch!! Debbie

Hey Debbie, my Lap-Band is scheduled the same day as yours, but in Florida. Basically, the preoperative diet is to shrink your liver so they can get to your stomach more easily. Pretty much a liquid diet with protein shakes to hold hunger to a minimum, lots of water, sugar-free jello (all you can eat), some yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. It makes sense to me for their reasons, and not at all about preop weight loss, but for safety regarding surgery. Mine is for 10 days, not two full weeks. Anyway, good luck on your surgery and can't wait to hear about your success.

Kathy, my surgery is tomorrow. I had to do 2 weeks liquids only diet. If you find a great protein drink, just stick with that, because it makes your cravings for food to go away. It's the carbs that make you hungry. Good luck!
