Tonsillectomy... and I'm scared!

I'm getting my tonsils out this Friday. All your thoughts and prayers would be much appreciated. I've needed to do this for nearly 6 years now... and I guess now is as good a time as any. I hear the recovery is horrible and can last for up to 2 weeks to 20 days. My hubby is getting 10 days off. That is more then he had with my RNY. He only took 4 days off for my RNY and I was up and about very well after that. I don't expect to bounce back as well this time. I'm NOT looking forward to this. My tonsils are really bad and are infected about 85% of the time. I'm just hoping I can get the proper pain meds for me. I told the surgeon I have had gastric bypass and can not have any NSAIDs. He didn't seem to like that and was ignorant as to why I can't. I sure hope he has a better alternative to them for me. I DO NOT want to fight this pain alone. I've spent some hours reading up on Adult tonsillectomies and found that it's not a easy or fun thing to go through... Anyways.. I know you all have your own stuff you are going through, but I just wanted to post and let you know what's going on. Maybe you could offer some advice? Good news.. the 5 day pouch test that everyone says is a miracle, will be no issue for me during this time. I can't have anything solid for over 2 weeks. Just liquid and mushys... been there done that and got the T-shirt! Maybe I will be able to break my stall? Someone pass me my whey gourmet peanut butter chocolate protein shake... and lots and lots of oxycotin laced ice-chips! Thanks again! -Shakeira

Well I will be thinking about you but I have a patient that is in her 30's and just had hers done she was down for a couple days. but you know what you have already been to hell and back with gastric bypass; I think you will suprise yourself. Just remember to drink lots and maybe go back to liquid protien for a week or as long as you need to. Well Good luck and I am thinking about you....

Oh Shakeira I know nothing about this type of surgery but I will definitely keep you in my prayers. The liquid diet for 2 weeks will probably help you drop a couple more pounds which is a nice fringe benefit. Get lots of rest and drink your protein shakes and hopefully your recovery will be quick and with very little pain. Hugs!

Hey Shakeira, I had a tonsillectomy when I was 22 and it wasn't fun, that's for sure, like a very bad sore throat. I remember it was a couple weeks til I felt fully better, but like anything else, ever day was a little better. You're already a pro at liquids and mushy and I know you'll get through it - the payoff was I haven't had a single sore throat since then (knock wood!) and I'm 48 now. Much better than before when i was sick every month. You know the drill, rest, relax and take care of yourself. Hugs, Inky

I had my tonsils out at 28. I have to be honest with you..it's no picnic. My recovery took a few weeks. I hope yours is easier. Just remember.eventually the pain goes away and then no more sore throats
