surgiversary
One year ago today I was sitting in the pre-surgery cubicle (you couldn't really call it a room as it was very small) with my best friend waiting for them to come get me. I was fat, diabetic, and hypertensive, with some g.e.r.d. thrown in for good measure. I was on insulin, BP meds, cholesterol medicine, plus eating Tums like they were candy. They came and got me, put me to sleep, and operated on me.
That was the death of the old me.
When I woke up, that was the birth of the new me. My official arrival into this world was August 29, 1950, but my real arrival into life occured on April 16, 2007.
I have lost 90 pounds, am no longer on diabetes medicine, am off all but one BP medicine, and have perfect cholesterol/trigliceride/sugar numbers. I am training for a marathon, buying clothes in the "normal" departments of stores - heck, I'm able to buy clothes in normal size boutiques as well (Catherines and Lane Bryant - you dressed me well, and I thank you for providing nice clothes for fat ladies, but I no longer need you), and enjoying all sorts of things I did not enjoy before. I can ride any ride at the fair closing the safety bar all the way down, I can sit anywhere on a plane and not worry about invading my seat mate's space, and I can climb up and down stairs easily. As a singer in the church choir and a local community chorus I can sustain long notes without having to take a "snitch breath", I can stand for long times without having to sit down. I can do many things now that I could not do before.
Thank you, OH, for providing the name and contact information of the Central Mississippi Medical Center Bariatric Center and their doctors. as well as providing answers to my questions about the types of surgeries available and other concerns. Thank you, Adam Dungey, Dr. Erin Cummins, and the entire bariatric staff at CMMC. Thank you, God, for giving them the ability to serve the Jackson metro WLS community so ably. And thank you, God, for pointing me in the right direction and helping me get through the transition period without trouble. Thank you Suzy, Randye, Jay, and Corinne for the support you gave me before, during, and after the surgery. And thank you A-Team for being there for me this entire year. I love all of you.
To all of those who share this date with me, Happy Surgiversary! We've come a long way in a short time. I'm proud of all of us.
