I just got out of the hospital

Sorry I missed the weigh in this morning. I was too busy being in excrutiating pain this weekend. On Friday night I was admitted to the hospital. I had such severe abdominal pain. The ER took abdominal xrays and it showed I was impacted with stool very high up in the colon. I was surprised because I did have a bowel movement that day. Since surgery, I have had problems with constipation but I was shocked to hear how much was hiding inside of me. One enema later got rid of a lot, but the pain persisted. I was given dilaudid, which is stronger than morphine, every 2 hours. It didn't even touch the pain. I had a CAT scan to see if there was an intestinal blockage, but there wasn't.. My surgeron came in and said everything looked ok from a surgical point of view and he was very happy he didn't need to go back inside of me. I was in the hospital from Friday until tonight. I don't know how to resolve this problem. My surgeon says not to take laxatives, to eat high fiber foods. I had been taking miralax and he thinks laxatives cause more harm than good. I have tried prunes, prune juice, fruits, etc......but there is just so much I can eat. I will be calling a gastroenterologist tomorrow. Anyone have anything similar to this?

Well when I had pnemonia...the antibotics Z-pack made my stool like wet sand...and I had some lower pains and some hemmoriods....NEVER had this trouble before.....Do you take fiber daily???? I take Benefiber....I do the chewables and I take 2 with eat meal.... Ohh yes with us laxatives do cause more harm.....What they do is rush water to the intestines and if what caused your constipation was dehydration then it is just a quick fix but then 2-4 days later you will have the same problem again...My daughter started having troubles with her stools when she was 5 and she was so badly packed that only inches where left of space....now she takes 1tsp. of mineral oil daily and she is fine....It just keeps things greased up....lol.....

My daughter also had to take mineral oil for a long time. But, yuck, I don't think I could stand that. Any suggestions how to hide it?

Well I would put it in juice.... Orange juice worked the best and she never knew it.. or you could add it too a protein shake,,,

Sharyn, I still have pain, and nausea. Also, my insides feel like they did right after surgery. I need to hold my tummy when I move or go over a bump in the road.

Shar, I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I have been very constipated since surgery. I have only recently started having regular BMs. But I still don't feel normal. I have been very afraid of getting a blockage. Let us know what they find out and how we all can avoid something like this happening. Take Care, Joni
