Ok, anyone else get this alot... When are you going to stop losing weight!
Folks are getting alarmed that I've lost 130+ pounds so far, and have even said - you're too skinny now. I'm 6'2" 205# and they say I'm too skinny?! While I'm sure they're just concerned for me, I do wonder "how low should I go". I'm on the doorstep of onderland, and have been only 10# lighter than right now in my entire adult life. I think another 15# would be about right, then I'd be 190# and within normal weight for my height.
But how does one consider stopping losing weight, when the past 6 months have been all about "sticking to the plan". I'm having enough trouble getting my 90-100g of protein in by eating three 4 ounce meals and a snack now. I know I can probably get more calories by snacking on "good carbs", like nuts and fruit, but isn't snacking still frowned on unless it's for the protein?
I guess these are all good questions for the dietician when I meet with her in November. Just seems odd to think about "stopping" weight loss, when my whole adult life has been about losing weight!
Any ideas on this topic?
Ah yes, welcome to my world. I look in the mirror and appear thinner than I'd like. Particularly in the shoulders, chest, and arms. I do, however, still carry extra weight on my stomach, and thighs. I know the dilemma of which you speak.
The BMI charts show I should be below 215 lbs. I just laugh. I'm at 260 lbs. and my family is telling me to quit losing. My Doctor never gives me a number to shoot for with the weight. He's just happy (as am I) my blood pressures, blood sugars, and all my blood work really, is now normal. So, I set MY goal at 247 lbs. BMI of 29. If I lose more than that the majority of the loss will be coming from muscle.
Lately, I've been returning to a more "normal" diet. I'm eating carbs. Some sugars, and caffienes (Coffee, mostly- occasionally) and LOTS of fruits. I still eat 3 meals and a snack, but I'm trying to eat a diet I can live with for life- with moderation being the key. I avoid sweets, candy, and manufactured snack foods. I.E. Healthy, natural foods. It seems to be working for ME, but I'm certainly not recommending it for EVERYONE.
I believe, excercise is the key for ME, at this point in my journey. I need to work the weight of my middle, and rebuild my upper body.
Talk to some "older" post-ops, and see what they're doing. I wouldn't be afraid to experiment with some healthy, non- protein rich foods at this point. Still strive for your 80g of protein, but I find fruits and veggies really pick me up.
Just my $.02. You've really done well , Jeff. Don't sweat it now, buddy. You're not gonna go Anorexic. We've got our whole lives to tweek the program. Experiment and enjoy.

I'm wondering if you guys do any strength building work? More muscle would fill you out a bit and maybe people wouldn't be so concerned. Plus, more muscle burns fat, so you wouldn't have to obsess as much about calorie counting. Definitely meet with your dietician. I have no helpful info for men's diet needs because it is much different than women's. Good luck, you're doing great.
I have also had some of those comments, but my doc says that most of us will start to slow down on the weight loss around the normal weight or slightly above that goal weight, so it will slow down and the biggest weight loss is the first 6 months. Definitely consider working on more weight training, which will also slow down the numbers on the scale but improve the body fat % and strength/appearance because the muscle weighs more than fat. I am personally going to keep trying to lose weight till I get to my goal but I am going to increase the weights.
I agree, strength training is the key. There is a coworker of mine who also had surgery, and he seemed to gain 10 years on his appearance because he focused soley on weight loss rather than building muscle. He does look too thin and many people compare his results to mine (even though we are 8 months + difference in surgery dates). So, pump that iron buddy and don't worry so much about calories. You look awesome! I've been on this organic food kick lately and i have to say, i feel awesome as a result. check out your options, and keep us posted, K?
