Help I've reached a plateau, am I going in the wrong direction!
I am new to this board, but everyone had surgery the same month I did, so please give me some advice. I have been walking alot, getting in alot of exercise(4 miles a day, everyday), but I have only lost 50lbs since surgery and I find that I even get weak and shakey after working out. I have started drinking GNC high protein drinks, fresh fruit, beans, meat(when I can****asional cracker or oatmeal w/protien and I drink crystal lite. I also notice I get nauseated lately, and either chewing gum or eating a piece of fruit helps. SW219/CW170/G120
Don't be down on yourself, 50lbs is great! And 4 miles a day, that's impressive!
Plateaus do happen, I'm actually up 2 lbs this week, so I've resumed walking too, but I typically walk 2.5 miles. How long does it take you to walk the 4 miles? Today I walked 2.5 walks in 50mn, not very fast I think, will try to speed it up tomorrow.
I feel weak right after walking too, but it passes fast. Today I had a cup of chocolate milk right after my walk to try and get over the twitching in my legs. Seemed to help, but of course it's got some sugar, so it's not a perfect food.
I get nauseated too especially when I eat a bit of cheese or something fatty. I think I may be headed for gall bladder troubles, but nothing distinct so far.
Congrats on your success!
Don't be to hard on yourself. I know I have lost a great amount but I have not had a significant loss in well over a month. I hit my end of august goal before the first of August and got stuck after that. I am just now starting a small loss again. I would recommend checking out the sugar content on some of the foods you have added to your diet. Not sure how quickly you are eating but I get really nauseated if I eat to quick. I get very dizzy and weak if I haven't had real protein at times. I don't do supplements or shakes and my doctor doesn't want me to either. They have way to much sugar in most of them and he only wants me eating foods with natural proteins. If I eat to many carbs or anything with more than 5g of sugar I get really sick like shaky and weak and dizzy. I would definatly make sure you are getting enough calories walking that much you might be putting your body into Keotosis(sp) and this will prevent you from loosing as well. Your body might think it is starving.
Hi, Melisssa, thanks for the info. I think the weight loss problem might be akin to yours because I loss mine fast also, then nothing. As for the protein drinks I cannot have much of anything w/ too much sugar, I am a "dumper", so I watch sugar content very closely. But your suggestion on the protein is exactly what my nut told me, eat more protein. I also thought like you said about the fact that I might be burning too many calories during my work out. Thank you for the help.
Hi,
First off, congrats on the loss and especially your 4 miles a day - that's terrific!!
Are you getting enough calories and do you have a little protein before you start your exercise? You may want to check with your surgeon/nutritionist to find out what your program's requirements are , or to have some blood work and make sure all your counts are correct.
Sometimes that shakiness can also be dehydration, so be sure you are drinking plenty of water during your walk and throughout the day.
As for the number of pounds, you started out as a light weight - even though 99 pounds is a big amount to lose, so your loss will typically be slower than that of someone with a lot more to lose. Please don't compare yourself to anyone, be happy that you are losing and definitely healthier than you were 4 months ago

Congradts on your progress, you are to be commended...!!! I too have hit a plateau, I have been struggling with the same 3 lbs for over a month now... up/down/up/ down, I have increased my walking from 1 mi. to 2.5 miles a day, takes me about 40 minutes to complete.....occasionally I do skip a day, I know, my BAD! Anyhoo, I know my issue has to do with my diet, I am finding that I can eat more than I could even a month ago, plus I am eating just about anything I want, just about 1/4 as much as before RNY, I can only eat small portions, but they are increasing. I have got to get a grip.....I have lost 58 lbs, no 59, not 57, not 58, oh, who's counting!! I have been upset w/my surgeon lately that he did not make my pouch small enough, or my small intestin short enough, I am absorbing more than I should..... up to now, the weight loss has been failry easy, now it is becoming WORK!! Who know it would happen to this degree so soon, 4.5 mos out. (surgery 4/17/07).....however, I am pretty happy wit my weight right now, 207/208/205.5/204/207...lol, I really hope to get below 200, but I have to start eating right....problem is I sit at a desk all day, and I have a overwhelming need to always have something in my mouth, .... so I've started chewing gum, today it has helped, I am a food alcholic.... and sometimes i get really tired of this fight........... tomorrow is a new day, lets not be discouraged together... my suggestion to you as to myself, just hang in there, plateau's happen to EVERYONE.... keep the course and you will see changes eventaully, don't give up, you are doing wonderfully.
God Bless
Kim
