Kidney Infection / Kidney Stone

Hey guys... Haven't posted in a while due to being extremely busy and, as it turns out, pretty sick. Monday I was getting ready for work and suddenly felt like someone kicked me in the back. Went to the emergency room on my lunch break and didn't get home until about 9pm that night. They put me on a morphine drip and then Cipro - sent me home with more pain killers and Cipro... I can't help but feel like I brought this on myself by not drinking enough water... My bf's dad who also had RNY went through his own problems with kidney stones as well. Luckily in my case the stone isnt blocking anything and will hopefully dissolve on its own? Anyone else here go through something similar?

Was the only pain in your back? sometimes, when I havent drank enough water, I get a pain in my left belly area. Is that the same thing I wonder? Did you notice a difference going to the bathroom? How did they determine it was a kidney stone, xray? Sorry to ask so many questions.

Hi Dawn, The docs in the ER determined it was a kidney stone by giving me a CT Scan, bloodwork and urinalysis... The pain was radiating in my lower back- like a stabbing sort of pain followed by throbbing. Felt like someone kicked me in the lower back. My bathroom habits didn't change or feel different. Don't feel sorry about asking questions - if my post here ends up helping another person in the group determine what is going on with them, it is all worthwhile. Susan

I hope you are feeling better soon. I don't drink enough and I fear kidney stones also. I think this may bring to light how important it is to push those fluids. Shar

I had a kidney stone last month. I've never had babies, but understand from a friend who was in labor two days that the stone is worse. Yes, it's from not drinking enough water. Will it dissolve on its own? I don't know, but unless somebody else tells us differently, I don't think so. However, I don't know when mine finally passed, but eventually it did. Even though I was no longer hurting, my urologist had me come back in several times for x-rays, but we never saw it. I had blood in my urine though, so he thought it was still there. Finally I went in for another CT scan and it was not there, and my blood was clear so he pronounced me "cured". He told me you have pain when it's blocking the urethra. He said a stone is not perfectly round; it could lie down and not bother you if the urine can pass through. I do have to tell this, though - he was seeing me in the hospital and pulled out a picture of himself; told me he was a member of the Fraternity. He had WLS several years ago. Marcia

Oh Susan, that sucks! After reading your post, I ran to refill my water. Thanks for reminding us how truly important it is to push those fluids. I've heard that kidney stone pain is just the worst-poor you! I hope you feel better soon-keep us posted!

Susan, I hope it passes quickly. I have never felt that pain and that is a pain that I don't want to experience. I have not been getting enough fluids in but I am constantly working on that. Hope you feel better soon. Roz
