The New England Journal of Medecine is about to publish the results on the first long term studies of WLS. The findings are significant. One: people that have the surgery live substantially longer than obese people that don't. DUH! Two: people that have weight loss surgery tend to maintain there weight loss longer than those who lose through traditional means. Three: the surgery is safer than ever before. With approx. 1% of patients dying as a result of surgery or complications thereof. The impact of this study will be important to the Insurance end of the process. Will more people be approved for WLS because of these findings? Time will tell. My question. Knowing what you know now, would you re-mortgage your home or sell something of value to finance WLS on your own, for yourself or a loved one? DD

I can honestly say that I would. I never thought that I would say that this has been worth everything, but it really has. Those first few weeks were tough, real tough. But in retrospect I know that they were worth the pain and the misery!! So yeah DEFINITELY!!

DD that is great infromation! Maybe it will help get more people approved! To answer you question: YES I would do it again!!! I have found that in a short time I am alive again! My health is better and I DO feel I am going to live to be a grand mother now! (my only child is only 10) Thanks for asking the question. It gives a reason to look back and see where we have came from!

Absolutely, except for all the clothes that are too big, there's no real downside I see. Yeah, I occasionally wish I could have that chips & salsa I used to pig out on, but I can usually counter that with - "is it really that much to miss?" I'd definitely sell a car, mortgage a house to pay for this surgery if my insurance hadn't!

I would have the surgery agan in a heart beat just I would have have decided for ther RNY I would have asked my sister for the money if my insurence would have not paid for it. LOL she won the 340 million mega lottery .. but then again she did take care of her sister very nicely so I guess I was gonna pay for it even if my insurence did not . So glad it did it cost me 40 k to have mine with the hiatial hernia included. ouch!!! Lisa

In a heart beat yes I would, and yes I did re-mortgage my home because in Canada the wait list for medically covered weight loss surgery is 5-7 years long. I couldn't wait that long, I had so many co-morbilities that I felt the benefits of having the surgery sooner rather than later outweighed the cost factor. And in 4 months I am down 89 pounds, 10 dress sizes and feel so much better, my quality of life has greatly improved, every aspect of it has improved. Up here there are only approximately 20 surgeons doing any weight loss surgeries in all of Canada. I know there are more surgeons that can do the surgery, it's just that the provincial health care systems in each province don't have the nursing staff or OR time available, hence the long wait list. As an American all of you should feel lucky that your wait times are generally much shorter. Jody

HI DD and all the April Losers!!!!!! I would do it again no questions asked. I would sell whatever I had and did whatever I had to do to feel the way I feel now. I am alive again and I look and feel younger and have been told by many people. I spoke to my mother yesterday and she said she was so proud of me and you cannot put a price tag on that feeling. Take care everyone and have a blessed day. Robert
