Surgeons do surgery, dieticians do dietary.....
Well, I got the "skinny" on protein from my dietician today. If you recall, my surgeon was concerned that I was getting too much protein (80-90g per day) than he wants. He said, you should only go for 60g per day.
The dietician had told me 80-100g per day is ok with my goal weight of 200#. She explained that I need to get 1-1.2g of protein for every Kg of my goal weight. That comes out to 90g per day (200# goal weight, 2.2kg/lb, so 200 divided by 2.2 is 90). She and I agreed to let the surgeon deal with things surgical, and the dietician deal with things dietary.
Interestingly, after meeting with the surgeon last Wednesday, I stopped losing! I'd decreased my protein to 60g, and had trouble with carbs on one day. I've been back on the 80-90g of protein and less than 60g of carb program for two days now, hopefully the process restarts itself soon!
I'm also going to "step up" my walking a bit for good measure. Pardon the pun!
Wasn't there a post by DD about needing 80g of protein and 800 cal to keep the fires stoked for weight loss? I seem to recall something like that.
Thanks Allie, I guess that's why my dietician said 80-100g of protein. It's kind of maddening that there are so many differing opinions in the area of nutrition after RNY. You'd think since they've been doing this for so many years that they'd have a little more uniformity in parameters.
It works though - I'd stalled at 60g of protein, and just 3 days after starting back on the 80g of protein, I'm losing again!
So, to recap, we've heard that our bodies need between 0.8g - 1.2g of protein for every kg of our ideal weight. Here's a little breakdown of what that means:
200# = 72 - 109g of protein
150# = 54 - 81g of protein
I'd suspect that since the range is 0.8-1.2g per kilo, hitting it in the middle is probably the most accepted level. Especially since an ideal weight of 150# would only be 54g of protein at the 0.8g/kg level. Most of us were told that 60g of protein was our goal immediately post op.
Hi Jeffrey.
Gee, you gotta' be a mathematician to figure this out. How many Kg = 1 lb?
If you need .8 or 1 protein for every kg of goal weight, then the first thing to figure out is how many kg in a lb, right? I want to be 125... can you help me figure out how many protiens I should be getting in? How to figure the carb number??
I feel like I need to take a class. thanks! -kg
125# is about 57 kg, so you should be getting 45-68g of protein according to the 0.8-1.2g/kg ratio. Given that we've all been told that we need at least 60g of protein per day, I'd check with your dietician for clarification. I've not heard anyone suggest any less than 60g of protein in my meticulous search of the web and NIH data.
I'd be suspicious of the 0.8g/kg ratio due to your situation - if someone wants to be 125#, they'd be eating less than the RDA for a normal person! I also question the fact that though we take in 60g or 80g of protein, we don't absorb things normally anymore after RNY. Perhaps that's the reasoning behind the 1g/kg and 1.2g/kg arguements.
Feeling more like a scientist than a cook every day on this journey!
PS- While we're discussing all this together, we should all consider that it's our dieticians that have gone to school for this, and take their word over what we read on the web. IE - do what your nut says!
