Weight loss per week....
I've settled into losing about 3 lbs. per week. I know I shouldn't be dissappointed but I do struggle with feeling let down. I see so many of you are already down between 50 and 60 lbs. since surgery and I'm only at 41 (44 w/ preop liquid diet) lbs. lost. I am doing everything I know to do, but I feel like I'm not doing as well as everyone else. I know we aren't supposed to compare but it's hard not to. My calories have only been around 600 per day but I am getting in all of my protein and most of my liquids and of course all of my vitamins. I eat very low carb. I walk on my treadmill. What are the rest of you doing that I'm not?
I don't want to sound whiney at all. I just don't understand why I'm slow???
I would also love to know what the secret is... I had my surgery on 4/4 and am only down 40 pounds. This past week I only lost 1 pound. I have to admitt that I have just started walking. I was so tired for so long that I couldn't do it. I would be thrilled at 3 pounds a week but I am averaging only 2...
Of course you shouldn't compare, and of course it is hard not to.
But here is why you shouldn't compare... what was your starting weight? The heavier people lose weight faster. My surgery weight was 343, and I have lost 65 lbs, that is a little over 18% of my body weight. If you started at 250, then the same 18% is only 47lbs. You have to look at it that way. Also, height matters. Taller people have higher resting metabolic rates because it takes more fuel to run a bigger engine (if that makes sense). I am 5'9" - tall for a woman, so I burn calories faster (that's why men typically lose weight so much faster)
So the point is - you are doing perfectly. You cannot compare based on pounds alone. Look at the percentages.
Sorry. I had another thought after I posted...
The standard expectation in the 3 months after RNY surgery is that you will lose 30% of your excess body weight. So do the math to check up on yourself.
My goal weight (the weight that will put my BMI in the normal range) is 160. My surgery weight was 343. I have lost 65 pounds as of today (don't go from your highest or starting weight because this is just to gauge how well the surgery is working for you). So, I had 183 pounds to lose and I have lost 65, therefore I have lost 35% of my excess body weight. Here is how to check:
1. Set your goal weight
2. Subtract your goal weight from your D.O.S. weight to get your excess weight
3. Divide the amount lost by the excess body weight, the answer is a fraction, translate that to the percent of excess weight lost.
I guesstimated that your goal weight would be 140 (but I have no idea how tall you are), and I saw in your profile that your starting weight was 274. That would mean that you have already lost 32.8% of your excess weight and it hasn't even been 3 months yet. You are ahead of the curve!!!
Congratulations!!! Stop worrying
Jessica those are all good points. Thank you. I went back and reread my orginial post and I sound like a big baby. I'm sorry!! I, probably like most of us, am so afraid of this thing not working. Thank you for working out the math for me. That does make me feel a lot better seeing that. The goalthe doc gave me is actually 130... I am only 5 ft. 1 in. tall. But I can still see that I am already (almost) at 1/3 of the way at 2 months out. That makes me feel better.
I actually think this is a great post. We all wonder how we are doing compared to others-we just can't help ourselves. I had some large drops right after surgery but since then I lose on average 3 lbs a week. I know this is a steady healthy amount to lose and I love it.
I have lost 48 total but I am another tall one 5'10". My suggestion would be to get your calories to 800 a day. At 600 a day my weight loss had slowed. Funny to think by eating a bit more we will lose more but it is the truth.
I noticed this last week when my program added a lot more foods that I was able to eat a bit more and my weight loss has really revved up this week.
I did the figures and I have lost 41%. Now that is a WOW moment for me. However, I was a bit conservative in setting my goal weight which is the high end of normal. So, I may actually be closer in % to you.
I think you are doing fantastic. Hang in there and know you can come and share with us whenever you need to.
Jessica, those are SUCH great posts-thank you! I immediately pulled out my calculator and saw that I'm doing even better than I thought. This is good timing, because my weight loss has slowed down a lot and I was started to worry that I'm going to fail at this. Phew, it looks like everything will be OK. Amber, I know how you feel-it's hard to not compare ourselves to others, but you really do have to keep in mind that everyone is starting at a different weight and height, with different body compositions. You're doing great!
If I did this correctly, I'm down 37.8%?!?
I was 265 at surgery. My goal is 140. That's 125 excess weight. When I do the division I get 3.78 so if I multiply that by 10 (to convert it) I get 37.8. Is this correct???
As for whining and comparing...scoot over girly and let me sit near you cuz I'm right there with you!!! One lady that had surgery on the same day as me (I met her in the hospital) had dropped like 50 lbs in the first month! I was pissed. Here I am thinking that I'm below average.....again. Cuz I've never been good ENOUGH. Not that ANY of you can relate to that feeling right? (dripping sarcasm!) And then I thought about it and maybe I won't end up looking like a sharpei when I'm nekkid if I lose slower! Plus I can wear my new clothes a little longer before I donate em or exchange em w/ others! LOL
There's my piece!
