I dont know what to do
First of all, let me tell you that I lost my right kidney 3 1/2 yrs ago to cancer, so I have only 1 left. I have been getting in around 60 gms of protein a day. When I saw my surgeon on wednesday, I told him about me being so thirsty all the time and that I am only urinating twice a day if that. He told me to see my regular dr.
I saw my regular dr today and she did a urine test for protein, and sure enough, I am spilling protein into my urine which is a very bad thing. They are making me go see a nephrologist because now my only kidney is not working right. They told me to limit my fluids (which is awfully hard when Im dying of thirst all the time), limit my protein because it puts more work on my kidney to try to filter it out, and to eat more carbs because they filter the easiest.
Hello, that is opposite of everything that I am suppose to be doing with this surgery!!!
What the heck am I suppose to do??
I dont want to gain the weight back and I dont want to lose my only kidney.
Im very confused and discouraged right now
Wow.. this sounds really difficult. Maybe you can talk to your surgeon about this? I would stay away from protein drinks and powders and bullets and stuff.. since they are harder on the kidneys to process then normal food protein. I'm no doctor though. But if I was in that situation I would concentrate on saving the kidney. The weight will still come off.. your portion sizes are still very small. There is a liquid protein called "Proteinex" I believe.. and it's supposed to come from pork (ewwww) but I've been told it's great and easier on the kidneys.. but that's from reading that adverstisment for it.. so ask your doctor!
Your in my prayers.. please keep us updated!

Hi Cindy,
I don't really have an answer for you, but I am so glad that you went to your regular doctor and are going forward.
I'd take care of that kidney if I were you, and not worry about the protein right now until they can determine a good solution. You can still make good choices and you're eating such a small amount that you won't be gaining weight back while the doc's find the right steps for you.
Please keep us posted!

Hi Cindy,
Your first priority is to get healthy and strong. Even if you did gain back some of your weight the focus needs to be on your kidney and whatever you have to do to take care of it. You need to nurture yourself and not stess yourself out by worrying if you might put some weight back on. I know that's easier said than done but there is an order to everything and being thin can't be more important than your body functioning properly. Be patient with yourself and listen to your doctors right now.
I will send a prayer up for you to be strong and to get this resolved and get right back on track. Just know that all of us are here and you are not alone.
Take care,
Debbie
hi cindy I am sorry to hear all of this. I believe tht you should really concentrate on trying to save you kidney. My best friend just had surgery and she lives off of baked potato from wendys she had her surgery feb21st she was 238 and is now down to 167 so she is losing plenty of weight. she eats whatever she can keep down and right now that is potatoes. You wil stilll lose weight... you should focus on what the dr told you about your kidney. You dont want to live on dialysis right????? Thats what will happen if you lose that kidney hun....if you wanna talk email me carol.
Cindy,
No question about it!!! get healthy! Take care of the kidney issue. The weight will come off. My question is.didn't the dr's think of this pre op? I have a friend who is close to kidney failure and the surgeons are being very careful with her and their approach to her upcoming surgery. Get healthy, girl! thats' the most important thing!
Dear Cindy
I am gonna be here for ya .. first of all first things first work on saving the kidney ,, no if's and's or butts ,,u don't want to lose the other kidney and i am sure it has not come to this state yet ..
.. I am sure u r very scared and think u have no options but u do .. as u lose weight less stress on the kidney etc just gonna be a balancing act right now .. I am sure u will be refered to a diatician as soon as they find the cause and know how to treat u ..
I have worked with alot of dialysis patiets and alot were able to lose weight but follow directions what the docs says .. less water means that and less protien
u can still lose weight even with less protien and less water... less calories ,, remember u have a tiny tummy 3500 calories equals a pound..
Protien can come from having a infection or kidney stones or bladder stones ..they will do alot of test to find out why
I am keeping u in my prayers ..
Get better
LIsa
In fact my hubby was spilling protein last week and he is a RNY pt but they did say that it could be from a infection he also had blood in his urine .. he has apt on monday after a week of antibiotics then if he still has blood or protien then he is off to a specialist as well.. His doctor said the fact he doesn't have high blood pressure and not a diabetic anymore he will not strain his kidney ,,,
he eats very low protiern and has lost over 100 lbs .. he had so many co morbities it was the best choice ..
make sure u r not diabetic that can make u spill protien as well ..
Just remember they r very cautious of u due to fact u only have one kidney and they don't want u to lose it .. so they r on the side of caution ..
Wow Cindy....I am not sure what to say other than sounds like Lisa knows a little more than me.....But yes your first thing is to get your kidney straightened out. We are here for you...and we will be thinking about you alot and so you have to let us know how things are going because I am such a worry wart...I will be walking the floors....
Just rememeber that your main reason for the WL surgery was for a healthier lifestyle and a healthier you. Losing the weight is important to you , taking care of your kidney is even more important. Let health be the main issue. We get so focused on weight but we have to take care of our total self. Now if I could just use that advice myself. Please keep us posted. Your A-Team friend M.Y.
