First Day Mushies!

Today was one week out of surgery, and first day of mushy food. Interestingly enough, after rereading the doctor's booklet, his nutritionist's guidelines, and the bariatric guidelines from the hospital (a bariatric center of excellence so I guess they know their stuff), all 3 were just slightly different regarding exactly what is considered mushy. I chose to err on the conservative side, and today has been: 1 ounce 1.5% small curd cottage cheese for breakfast (7 grams protein) 1 ounce no fat refried beans for lunch (2 grams protein) 1 ounce underwood chicken spread for dinner (5 grams protein) so far all were totally tolerable, and the Underwood chicken spread (by the same folks who bring you "deviled ham") is delish!! I could have ground up some chicken, but this was faster and very tasty. It felt great to eat something substantial, even though I was not hungry. I have had some brief bouts of head hunger throughout the last two days, but tried to stay busy and eventually it passed. I also found a protein drink I actually like. it is Protidiet Pink Lemonade mix. I used 1.5 scoops (15 g protein) to 8 oz water, plus half a packet of crystal lite fruit punch flavor, over a couple of ice cubes. i could not taste that protein funk and there was no grit or aftertaste, so at least so far, one i can deal with. I am 15 g short from my 60 required, and will use Prostat 64 (2 tbsp - 15 g) to top it off tonight. I'm proud I was able to get it all in, but still have to work on a few vitamins and the right timing for all that. whew, it's a job!! How are y'all doing on the protein and mushies? Inky

For your fluids you could add a glass of milk in there if you like milk. You don't have to only drink water or Crystal Lite. An 8 oz. glass would give you 8g of protein. Allie

Unfortunately, I didn't like milk before the surgery, and I don't like it now either, lol, was sort of hoping that might change. But I did find some Carnation No Sugar Added and I'm going to try that recipe you gave with the added nonfat milk, I should be able to tolerate that! Thanks Allie!! Inky

Oh I'm glad you're trying the recipe. You can alter it up how you like it. It may be a little thick but you can add you some ice cubes and stick it in the blender for a little frozen yumminess!! Allie

Wow Inky, I was told to stay on a liquid diet for 10 full days and then I can ease into thin purees. Lucky you getting to eat something only after a week. Oh well, tomorrow is my fist day of purees and I can't wait! But they still don't want me to chew anything so my puree has to be the consistancy of applesauce or pudding. Big deal! Oh well, it's better than sipping liquids! Cheers, Lisa

I think it's really interesting how every doctor/program is different. Mine also only required 2 days liquid prior to surgery. Good luck today on your puree day, it will get better every day!! Inky

Hi Inky, I also like to take cans of soup and blend them. I found myself craving hearty things, and bean with bacon soup, lentil soup, split pea with ham, and vegetable beef tasted delish to me. Good luck! Lisa
