One week out and frustrated as heck.

I am one week and one day post-op (surgery date 4/18) and getting frustrated. I lost 12 lbs. five days, but nothing since then (in fact, I actually gained a pound one day, but lost it the next). I just want to cry it's upsetting me so badly. Is this normal? I had thought that cutting back from 3000 calories to less than a 1000 calories per day would result in some dramatic weight loss.....

I can understand your frustration, but keep in mind the band is not suppose to be for dramatic weightloss. It is a working well when you lose 1-2lbs a week. That is healthy and should be everyone's goal. That being said, You are doing amazingly! Stop watching the scale every day and just weight once a week. Also know that as women our body's water retention vary daily. That can contribute to the gaining back of a lb or not losing any since day 5. One more note, eating less than 800 calories a day can put your body into starvation mode and will actually make it cling to everything you eat, fat and all. So make sure to get all the calories in a day that you can according to your nutritionist.

ETA: just noticed you were RNY not LapBand...Other than the amount of weight loss, my OP still stands.

Thanks, Sherra. It's one of those things where I know in my head that all that is occurring is logical, but my heart says "you need to lose, lose, lose!" Take care, Nicole

Hi - EXACT SAME THING happened to me. Don't despair! My tip is to stop weighing yourself daily. I know it is hard but it really really helps. Once a week is fine. Your body weight fluctuates daily based on water retention (related to sodium intake, etc). Just think of what you used to eat vs. what you are eating now. You ARE losing weight if you are following the rules. Another tip - don't compare yourself to people on these boards. Everyone's experience is different and everyone has different body chemistry's. I know I am only about 4 weeks out and certainly not an expert but I agonized over the same thoughts and it helped to talk to my doctor (and not just other patients).

Well I had a lap band and i have only lost 6 lbs since surgery same day as yours .. I think I am only getting at most 400 calories in .. and i am as frustrated as well but i know I am not a RNY .. but i know exzactly what u r thinking go from 3000 plus calories to 400 and u think it would drop off but I need to remember my body is going threw a huge metabolic shift .. my blood sugars r great w/o meds .. heck i have no even had my first BM (potential weight loss there i am sure LOL ).. so i know it will take time and yes we r all different and just be patient .. i have to beleive that also .. but no matter what i have to think i am not on diabetic meds that made me gain so much weight .. it will come off ... but i do notice my clothes r bigger My journey will be slow but hey i am not in 257 any more i am in 244 something i have not seen in years ... Be well lisa

That is a great weight loss for 1 week. Everyone is different, like me being close to 400 lbs my doctors says I might lose it a little faster then someone who only has to lose just over 100 lbs or so. You are on the right track!! I only weight myself once a week. Go by the way your clothes feel. That is where you are going to notice the BIG difference. Best of Luck, Dani

I had surgery on the 20th and have not weighed yet. Hey, just throw those old scales away and measure your progress on how you are following the plan set up by your doctor. how you feel and how your close fit. I think these might be better trackers of your progress! Give yourself a break, everyone deserves a break every once in a while and believe that someone greater than us has control of all of this stuff. The best to you!!

Hi Nicole, Glad to hear I'm not the Lone Ranger. Same thing happened to me this morning, I hopped on the scale, and VOILA- same weight as yesterday. Frustrating? Yeah. Permanent? No. One day I'll hop on and it will be down 3 lbs. for no apparent reason. That's just the way these things roll. The important thing to remember is, THE NUMBERS WILL GET SMALLER. Hang in there. It's a lifelong, lifestyle change. Not a sprint to beautiful. DD

Nicole... I had my surgery on 4/16 and I haven't lost anything since Monday. In fact, on Tues. I was up a lb. too. Don't dispair it sounds like we are normal. Thanks for posting this thread b/c I was beginning to wonder what was going on too!!!
