does anyone know the guidelines with United Healthcare? I want to have the lapband surgery but I am concerned about my health insurance.

I just did. Keep in mind that you have to find out if your company picked a plan that allows the WLS. If so, then the requirements are 5 years of document obesity, comorbid conditions and a bmi over 40.

That's my problem I am right under the 40 bmi (I am a bmi of 37 with strict dieting!))and I do not have diabetes or heart disease... I have been over weight for years and tried every diet in the book... I'm so frustrated because I feel behind a rock and a fat place. Congrats on your surgery I am happy for you!

The other option is simply financing the procedure yourself. My doc charges $15,500 and it includes all the fills for the first year. I didn't think that was unreasonable. And capitalone finances for health care.

We have United Healthcare and I just got my approval letter yesterday. They had a very quick turn around! I am surprised at how fast it has gone through. I am having Lapband the first week in June. Just call them up and ask them.... Good Luck!

We first had heathnet hmo for my hubby RNY and it took 3 years of appeals even tho he had 10 plus comorbities and bmi of over 40 but it was over turned after many appeals and he was forced to have RNY not a lap band.. talk about then deciding what u need.. We switched in Jan 07 to aetna PPO and I had to have 5 years of being morbid obese and 6 mos of doctors intervention by march and submitted with aetna PPO and had a approval 2 days later i had diabetes and bmi of 40 .. easy process and i had lap band 1 week ago .. stay away from hmo they r in bussiness of saving them selves money not your life but then that is my opinion .. PPO is the way to go .. u pay for what u get ... hope this helps be well lisa

I had the lapband Jan 07. I am with pacificare which was recently bought out by United Healthcare. First step is get your Primary care physisian to refer you to weight management. Once you have started that relationship you can realistically start questioning about surgery. As far a I know you must join the program called Healthy Roads and be involved for at least 6 months. I receive a weekly phone appoitment with a nurse practioner, nutritionist, and exrercise physiologist. On top of my weekly weighins and by-weekly Phycology appt. You are the solution not the surgery. I hope this helps. Kevin
