Having my rny Monday the 16th. I am really worried about having a central line, and the possibility of throwing a PE or clot. Any advice, or experiences?

My hubby threw a blood clot prior to WLS and they installed a filter right after words to prevent any entering his lung again .. what i did find intresting prior to him having a blood clot (PE )is that he had a constant dry non specific cough months prior to his PE and they day he suffered it he thought he was having a asthma attack . he never showed sign of dvt in his legs but he did later find he had factor 5 laiden which was the cause of blood clots.. He did well after the wls 7 mos ago and he went from 295 to 188 and greatly reduced the risk of having one again we were told. When he had the surgery he walked walked and walked around the halls the hospitial and they gave him leg pumps during surgery to reduce that risk as well .. Key advice to u is ask your doctor what he is gonna do to lower your risk of having one and ask him for blood tests that will show u if ur prone to them. best of luck be well Lisa

Regarding clots, make sure you are up & around ASAP, and stay that way for several weeks. Some docs also prescribe heparin shots. Ask yours. Most times central lines are not a big deal. Keep it clean, don't mess with the dressing.
