Liquid diet pre-op questions

Hi all, I've been reading here for a bit now and seeing the pre-op liquid diet all over the place. Some surgeons don't require it, some want a couple days, some want 10 days, some want X pounds lost prior to surgery. My surgeon requires a clear liquid only diet 2 days prior to surgery, and nothing after midnight the night before surgery (even though my surgery is at 1:30 PM!!! ack!!! I am want my liver not to be fatty so the RNY can be done laproscopically. I wonder if I should go on a liquid diet 10 days prior to surgery? Is that beneficial or will I make myself crazy and just do what the doctor requires? Now I know I'm starting the "over thinking it phase!!!" Inky

Inky, InKy, Inky, Don't volunteer for it. If your Dr. thinks you need it, he'll tell you so. My Doc told me it's to shrink the liver to make it easier to work around. The clear liquids are to "flush" your digestive tract. Less risk of infection. As always, follow YOUR Dr's directions. They all do it a little bit differently. DD

Hi David, Yep, I knew I was over processing information, even after I posted it, I thought to myself, sheesh, why force myself to do it for longer than my doctor requires!! I must be I received my pre-op instruction letter today and there it was, plain as day, start clear liquids only, no dairy and no substance to the liquid on April 24th. ok, i get it, and thank you!! good luck to you! It's interesting that the doctors are so different in what they require. I would love to only two or three days before surgery...not 7. Maybe they realize that no one will really honestly stick with the all liquid diet for a week....right David???? LOL. I just bought a couple of cans of a protein shake...i am going to try them and see if i like them. I would rather do the liquid right now and do the shake after surgery. One thing I was told is don't go out and buy alot of one protien drink cause after surgery your tastes will change. Good luck to you!!!!!

Ouch! Hey I stuck to it... with a few minor modifications for taste. LOL! I know how to lose weight. I just can't keep it off. Women might be stronger than men in this one, wee, tiny area. DD

My surgeon uses the liquid diet to not only shrink the liver but also we then do not need to go through a cleanse or enemas before surgery. Mine starts on Saturday and I know it will be hard but nything to not go through a cleanse is worth it in my book!

You know I was only kidding DD. I haven't even started the "liquids" yet...that starts tomorrow so ask me in a week how many times i have made "modifications" for taste. I have never been on a liquid only diet so time will tell.....all I do know is that it it will all be worth it in the end. Have a great evening!!!! Marcy

I start my liquids Saturday and I'm not too excited about it. My parents will be staying with us for the weekend and they and my husband will be enjoying some yummies while I get soup, and jello, and stuff like that. But then I think about the long term effect this will have, and that this is really temporary, and I feel better about it. I think being able to have that kind of control over myself around other people will feel EMPOWERING!!! Tonight is my last supper with my girlfriendz, and tomorrow with my parents. Here's to seeing ya on the losers bench!!! Michele
