OK peeps, I need some infor here.
I visited my cardiologist for my preop and everything went smooth as I posted earier. He prescribed Toprol, 50 mg, once a day until a week after the surgery. I hope I can swallow these after getting a band placed on. He said it's a beta blocker and would help prevent a heart attack during and subsequent to my operation. I thought no big deal. I had the meds filled and the bottle has more warning lables then a bottle of poison. I don't want to take them. I have to call my surgeon and ask about these. Anyone have a similar expereince????
Hi Eric,
I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on the internet, but I was taking Toprol for my high blood pressure. I had to switch to Atenolol because Toprol is an extended release medicine and according to my WLS surgeon, RNY patients cannot be on extended release meds, because of the new pouch and the short time a med would be in there to work. He had my PCP switch me.
I had only one side effect of Toprol and that was it made me sleepy, so I took it before bed. I did not wake up drowsy. Aside from that, I would have continued on it, if not for the extended release issue.
that's my .02 for my own self call your surgeon and ask, that's the best thing to do.
Inky
I had the same experience as Inky..... Was using Toprol and my doc switched me over to Atenolol. Definately call you doctor about this and see if it would be okay to switch over to the Atenolol that you are concerned about taking the Toprol because it's a slow release drug and we aren't suppose to take those kinds after the surgery. However, it may be different for Lap Band surgeries... but I would still ask. I have absolutely no side effects using the Atenolol.
Good Luck!
Lisa
