Rough time at night

Is anyone else having trouble with depression in the afternoon or evenings? I'll admit it. I am. I have decent energy most mornings but crash in the afternoon. I'm taking my vitamins and drinking water and trying to get enough protein, but still sluggish. My doc says that the sluggish part is to be expected because my body is "starving" even if I don't feel like it. I'm 3 weeks out of surgery and down nearly 40 pounds(including the wight I lost just b4 surgery.) The surgery was obviously a success. I'm just not sure how to feel about the "side effect". I'm wondering how long it will last or if there is anything I can do to improve it. I have a wonderful husband and friends for support but I'm sure it gets old for them to hear that I'm depressed every afternoon. I know they want me to get better. Thanks Denise

Try asking your Dr. for something for depression just for a while. I hear a lot of people who have to take anti-depressants for a few months after surgery. But as you can see it is almost 1am and I am awake, I wouldnt worry too much about being up at night. A lot of us do it. At least on my other board. LOL I think it is normal.

Maybe you need a little nap in the afternoon to give you a pick me up. Your body has been through alot and you need plenty of rest for your body to heal. I used to have a nap in the afternoon every day the first week but after that just seemed to sleep in in the am and I would be fine. The only thing with sleeping in vs a nap is that I don't always get 3 meals/day. If your sluggish maybe just take a little rest. I'll be 3 weeks out on Tues and have to admit that the past few days I've been feeling the lack of energy too now.....I guess your doc is right because we are in essence starving and our bodies are doing whatever it thinks it should do to hold onto the fat resources. I seem to be at a standstill the past few days - I admit I'm a scale freak and am on there every day which I know is bad. I'm up now because I was having some pain sleeping on the one position for so long and I really needed to drink something. If you truly think you may be suffering from depression - nothing wrong with asking your doc for some help either. Hang in there - I'm sure it will get better. Carolyn

Denise, I was feeling the same way just about a week ago but you know made things better for me my when I saw my doc she let me go to soft solid food, some chicken and fish earlier than I was suppose to but she was worried about my protein and I was always sad and tired, but since I have been eating my protein I have felt wonders it is amazing the feeling maybe you can talk to your doc and see if you cant start adding soft foods even maybe some thin sliced deli turkey I am telling you, you will notice a huge difference in your energy level..... best of luck and hang in there you know we are here for you....you need anything feel free to email me hugs and love lisa

I'm not depressed but I certainly get tired. I'll be three weeks out on Thursday. I felt better last week and then a few days ago I just started to be really tired. I was told to expect it from taking in so few calories and that it just takes awhile to come out of it. I'm not having any trouble sleeping at night but some days I'm waking up too early (like 5:30 am today) Lizzie

I get really sleepy/dopey after I eat. I've actually been going out to my car for a half hour to lie down at work. I think it's because I GO GO GO till I;m so dead, then I eat, then it takes a bit for me to feel better. PLan something nice for yourself at 4pm or so every afternoon- like visit a facorite website, play a few games of solitaire, go for a walk outside and smell the flowers etc! Even take 15 minutes and give yourself a foot massage. You're doing so well, keep up the good work!

Thank you for all of your repies and suggestions. The support really helps. I think the most important thing I need to do is not expect so much of myself. That is hard for me to do, but I'll work on it. It is tough to go from gulping large portions to chew, chew, chewing small bites. I'm trying to get on soft solids and keep letting my tastebuds take me farther than my new pouch can go. I'm trying to establish a "routine" while I'm at home, but my body doesn't always go along. LOL Thanks again. Denise
