5 days post op...have questions?!?!?!
Hi Andrea,
My doc had me start pureed foods on day 3.
I started w/ about 2 oz per meal...3 to 4 times a day.
Plus I get at least 1 protien shake in as well.
This is day 10 and I can eat appox 4 oz per meal.
He believes that eating early conditions the stoma and I have to agree as I have had no problems, and no nausea.
I do avoid dairy and use soy milk as I'm lactose intolerant.
He has me start the day w/ hot tea...no caffiene.
I chew, chew, chew and start the digestion w/my saliva. I personally think that is key. I eat ck, slocooked pork and beef....no problems.
Eggs are hard to get down for me.
I was having about 2 teas mashed potatoes in the beginning, but have stopped now and eat more soft veggies.
This has been my experience so far...ymmv

~first of all congrats on your new begining...it will take some getting used to,but it will get better. for myself i was sent home on pureed diet. I am now 18 days post op and down 25 lbs (started @ 6'1" 323 /295 now) I eat lots of protein rich foods because i can not stand the shakes...canned white meat chicken w/ a little sugarfree mayo or pickle relish, cottage cheese, eggs, ricotta cheese, (all kinds of cheese!) I would recommend that when you get to the softer foods stage that you might not want to eat too much cheese unless you are getting in your full liquids because it may cause constipation. I am eating 3-4 oz of food 3X's per day and lots of water in between (48-64 oz's @ this point) but working on more. For me i don't really get the whole "FULL" feeling in my pouch, so i just keep myself on a set schedual where i eat my 3 meals at pretty much the same time per day and (no cheating !!!!) I just take in water if i start to get head hungry. Occasionally i will eat a sugarfree fudgecicle if i get a sweet tooth...they are only 40 cals/5gr sugar, but they curb the sweet tooth. My doctor said to watch carbs and sugars, keep the protein up and get in the water as much as possible....and of course walk as far as you can comfortably for circulation.
Good luck on your journey...keep us all posted w/ your progress
I'm 9 days pos-op and doing fine. My doctor requires 7 days clear liquids then 7 days puree foods (apple sauce, pooding etc) and then 7 days soft foods.
One really good tip: We went to Smart and Final and got a sleeve of 4 oz suflee cups and lids. My husband makes soups and stuff in batches and then stores them in the cups. It saves him cooking time and keeps them fresher.
Swiss Miss pooding is my favorite, but about 4 oz of anything seems to be perfect for me.
The main things are:
1. I eat really slow and savor the flavor
2. I drink as much as possible 2 hours before and 2 hours after meals. ( I get my water in and there is no food to get cought up on)
3. When I feel weak, I have a protein shake. The best bargain I found was "100% Way Protein" It is a weight lifters powder and is low in calories, low in carbohydrates and has 24g of protien!! And it only works out to about 30 cents a serving.
I walk alot and then come back and rest hard.
Pills still give me pain. It feels like someone is dragging a piece of sandpaper past an open sore, but it is getting better and vitamins are essential.
You are doing great! Follow your docs orders and be patient. The first month is supposed to be the worst.
Blessings to you.
