Hi All! I just want to let everyone know that I am home from surgery and doing well. My surgery went well and was uneventful, my recovery is also going very well, I came home last night, and have had a quiet but enjoyable day today. It doesn't hurt much as long as I take my pain meds on schedule. I realized something today. I was thinking about how, when explaining to me again (for the benefit of my parents I think), before surgery, what was going to happen, Dr. S really focused on how WLS is a tool and is not a guarantee of weight loss. I thought it was curious her focus on that, since the surgery really has shown a great deal of success. Anyway today I realized that she is 100% correct. WLS is not a cure for Obesity. Obesity is a disease, but it is a complex disease that has both physical and emotional/mental components. The physical component is having been genetically predisposed to store excess caloric intake as fat instead of burning it off. Nothing has been developed to "cure" that, and in pre-modern times that was actually a benefit, but WLS is a tool that can counter act that genetic fact so obese people have a chance to live a normal life in the modern environment. As for the emotional/mental component, WLS can help by lowering person's hunger level, but hard work and determination, along with a support system and maybe counseling, are needed to counteract the head hunger, cravings, and emotional eating that so many obese people have. I know this is not news. Just for me a new way of putting things together. Blessings, Heidi L-S
