Hello all, I am having surgery 4/27, and have begun my liquid diet. However, I just have started today. I am a little worried that I will fail miserably at the liquid diet. I really only needed to start on 4/20, which is just 7 days prior to surgery, but, I figured I would start now. I am drinking Pro Performance Soy 95 protein shakes with soymilk. They are somewhat filling. Is there a way to make them more filling? Any hints? Am I going to make it? Are any of you further progressed than I am with the liquids, and thought you couldn't make it? How did you do it? It hasn't hit me yet that I can only drink, but, I am afraid it will strike at the worst times-when I am alone at home, or bored at the office. HELP-I can do this right? You did it??

I found the pre op liquid harder than the post op. I did use a lot of strained egg drop soup. I found it held me up longer and it was certainly more tasty than chicken broth. The other thing I did....cause I love to eat out...I ate out every chance I had. Of course I always had soup...strained. I ate slowly and small bites. Don't foget the drink your water. That also helped to fill me up. I have to honest, that pre op....I did wind up eating small pieces of chicken every once in awhile. I got light headed and dizzy. My doctor actually allows a light meal every other day. But I wanted to be as close to full liquids as possible. He actually told me after surgery that my live was in really good shape and it made it easier that I had followed his diet plan. Post op is a completely different story. YES...you can do this. Keep the prize in mind. Myrna

Thank you Myrna. I appreciate your response. My surgeons instructions were to only drink protein shakes and water, and if you got lightheaded or dizzy to eat eitehr an apple, banana or orange. But only once a day, that's it. He said our livers store the sugar we eat as glycogen which makes our liver huge, and if we don't do this our surgeon may have to do open. I really want to drink some chicken broth just for flavoring, and that has less sugar (none) and no calories or fat it's basically the same nutrients as the protein shakes, so I am thinking it's okay to do that. It's been since about 8pm last night since I've eaten any thing, and I feel (surprisingly) fine and not hungry. I mean, I think in the very back of my mind and stomach, I am starving and could go and gorge on some food right now, but, I won't give in. I hope not to at least. I was thinking I should eat dinner tonight and tomorrow, and do the shakes for breakfast and lunch, and then Thursday, which is 7 days to surgery, start a full liquid diet. Just so I can make it through okay.

Eeek! Nothing bu****er and protein shakes? You poor dear! I thought I had it bad that I'm on liquids for 2 weeks....but it's sugar-free full liquids whi*****ludes most strained soups and things like that. I can say I was pretty worried about it to and the first couple days were VERY rough. But I'm a week in (down 9lbs) and it gets MUCH easier after a couple days. It won't make the shakes any more filling and it might seem silly, but try eating them with a spoon rather than drinking them. It'll feel more like melted ice cream (though funny tasting) and mentally that might make it easier. I'm only thinking that because, while I'm on liquids, the idea of having to DRINK everything seems very difficult. Hang in there hun, you'll do fine! It'll be worth it in the end.
