What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
Has anyone seen this movie? If you have then you'll know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, it's a WONDERFUL movie. Rent it, you won't be disappointed! Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen.... 1993.
ANYWAY..... I'm in no way doubting my decision for surgery but when some of these commercials come on t.v. like NutriSystem, Medi-Fast, etc. I think, now THEY did it (of course, at the bottom of the screen it says "results not typical") why couldn't I, without having to result to drastic WLS. But I've been there, done that, and that, and that and every other THAT that came along. So I know the answer to "why couldn't I" and I'm okay with it. And I'm so very grateful that I've been given the opportunity and know that this surgery is for me.
I remember watching this movie, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, with my kids and what Gilbert Grape and those kids in the movie had to go through with their mothers SUPER Morbid-Obesity life, and death. And they couldn't bear the thought of the embarrassment and their mother being ridiculed any longer, even in death.
I know that my obesity affected my kids while they were growing up... you know how kids can be cruel, "your momma's so fat" jokes, etc.
I've recently sat and cried and told them how sorry I am for any embarrassment they have gone through in THEIR lives because of how I've lived MY life up to this point and I would never want them to go through what Gilbert Grapes family went through, especially in the end.
I know it's "just a movie" but it's reality. And just as another reminder of WHY I'm having this surgery, for myself, for my health, and for my kids, I watched it again tonight. It is sweet and it is sad.
And it has given me even more hope for a brighter tomorrow. I wish for you all brighter tomorrows as well.
