This is my first posting, so forgive me if I seem a bit niave. My surgery date is in two weeks and I am having a lot of trouble sleeping. I can't turn my brain off for thinking about it. Any suggestions, or thoughts to ease my nervousness, or even suggestions to sleep.

Hello Julia and welcome to April re-birth. We have a bunch of great people on this board. I understand what you are going through I am having some of the same problems. I think this is normal. I keeping think about the life style change I am gonna have to go through. Will i be sucessful and keeping the weight off after such a drastic measure? But I find comfort in prayer knowing that GOD would not have let me got approved if this was not for me. i find comfort in reading this board on a daily basis. I brought a book called weight loss for dummies and it actually have some great help in there. Most of the complication with this surgery is one percent even with death. I think about all of that. Then I think do i want to live the rest of my life being overweight? and the answer is no. Find comfort in the fact that you have made the right decision for you. I will keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery. Karen

Hi Julia, My surgery is tomorrow morning, 4/6. I've actually been very calm, almost too calm, up until today. I'm trying to keep busy and remember all of the wonderful friends, family, and even acquaintances from this website that are thinking of and praying for me. I know I can handle whatever comes after the surgery--I just want to wake up from the anesthesia (I've never had surgery before, so that part makes me nervous). I pray that the Lord will keep me safe and bring me home to my two beautiful girls and husband. This website has been a great source of comfort and information. Thank you to everyone willing to share their stories.

Yup, I am having a hard time sleeping too. I have to take a vicodin for pain and two melatonins to help me sleep. Then I have broken sleep. I dont know which is worse. LOL No sleep or broken sleep. Ugh! Dont worry, it will be here before you know it.

Hi Julia and others, my surgery is also 4/18. I am nervous also. So many things going through the brain and there doesn't seem to be a magic switch to turn it off. One of my biggest fears is getting through the protein drinks. I know getting enough protein daily is really important and for many the shakes have become a way of life and are included in their daily diet. The other thing that really worries me is beef, I love steak, tri-tip, london broil, filet mignon and rump roast and most people say they can not eat beef. For almost 2 years everytime I tried to eat chicken I got sick. I am eating it now but it is very low on the food chain for me. Fish I don't like a whole lot and pork can be as hard to eat as beef. Eggs, I cook my scrambled burnt, creatmated, I think they will not digest well unless soft scrambled, so that will leave eggs out. All this meat and eggs are your main sorce of protein, so if you can't get it down in meat or egg form then you need to do shakes. I keep telling myself I can do this, I can and will do this, I will do fine and I will love shakes, puddings, soups with protein whey in them. A few more little things, gas- OMG, it is really bad and you will have it and at the most inopportune times, not drinking when eating, and have you done the small bites and chew, chew, chew, and not drink at all. I also am addicted to diet coke, this is going to be the hard one, but my doc says if I let it go flat I can drink it, so at least maybe I can wean myself off of it and not die without caffiene. (lol) When I talked to my sister about this she was like this is like a punishment rather then something good. She had no idea just how hard it will be. I have no problems with sugar or starchy stuff at all. But those above, Lord give me strength. Also has anyone tried the Naked Protein Juice Smoothie? it is 38 grams of protein to a bottle but it is not listed on any of the listings here. I htink itis brand new. It does have some carbs to it though so I can't do it right now.

Julia, My name is Julia also and my surgery is scheduled for Monday the 10th. I saw my surgeon today and had to have an EKG as that was not done before. I am OLD I guess, at 57 years and that needed to be checked. If there is a problem I will be rescheduled but I am hoping it is o.k. as it always has been. I am excited and also nervous too. I am lining up people to cover for me at work which is not easy as I work as a nurse in 3 different facilities but it is happening so hope I don't have to reschedule. I have tried benedryl over the counter meds for sleep and they help sleep some nights better than others. Hope you get the sleep you need. It is frustrating when you cannot turn your mind off!!! In a couple of weeks it will be behind both of us and hopefully we will sleep better then. Good luck and you will be in my prayers as is everyone on this site. Julia

Hi, Julia Welcome and congratulations on your surgery date! It's good to have you here! It's very important to get plenty of rest before your surgery because stress and exhaustion causes are immune systems to weaken. We need to be as stong as possible, in all aspects, to fight off infections and to help in our recovery. It's easier said than done but what has helped me (even though I have my moments) is reading a book called Preparing for Surgery by Peggy Huddleston (it is a GREAT book) and listening to a relaxation CD, also by Peggy Huddleston, when I am most anxious during the day, and always at night before I go to sleep. You could also try taking a nice warm bath before bed with a few drops of lavendar oil .
