i dont post much but read alot of the post, i was just wanting to know if anyone has heard that mal absorbtion stops after about 9 months? that is what my dr. is telling me not my surgeon but i cant seem to get ahold of him. my surgery was april 27th 06 and i have lost 73lbs but im scared to death that im not going to get to my goal cuz my weight loss seems slow and i have been eating 1200-1500 cals a day, is that a lot at this point anyone else getting that much??? thanks for any input tami
Tamico,
The way I understand it is that, after a while, your body adapts to the shortened intentine and starts working harder and more effeciently.
I soulds like you loose SOME of the kick start from the mal-absorbtion but not all.
That is why we are encouraged to hit it fast and hard to loose because it will get harder after a while.
I read somewhere at the 12 -18 month mark you loose the kick--- I'm sure it's like everything else with this surgery - everybody is different.
As for calories per day - I get between 1000 and 1200 as a norm. I try to get a minimum of 60 Gm of protein a day but usually hit at least 75. They say it takes energy to burn calories and from personal experience - ( I lost 210 pounds in 10 months eating 1200-1400 calories a day and exercising). From what I hear- cutting the calories back too far just hurts inthe long run because you body thinks you are starving.
With the surgey I have experienced VERY sporatic weight loss ( had been pretty steady in past before surgery) . I'v had to tell myself " just do the best you can do" and that has helped my sanity AND eventually I see the results on the scale. My experience is that healthy eating and Exercise is the key to keep the weight commng off. BUT - I gotta tell you - I'm a work in progress too!!
Here's to seeing less of all of us!!
Cathy
Hello, I too am down 77 lbs. It is about average I guess for us to have lost about this much in 5 months. I haven't started an exercise program yet. Really need to. I eat around 800-1000 cals. a day. My DR told me to eat only 600 cals., but I just can't do it. I can't get in enough protein in 600 cals.
My hair is also falling out really bad. It started about 3 weeks ago. I have heard it will slow down around 8 mos. I sure hope I have a little hair left in 8 months! Take care all April WLS buddies!
