Hi all, I just found this section of the message board. My surgery was on April 17th and am progressing well. Have been very interested to see post from other April's but am not see anyone else that started Nearly as heavy as I did ( over 500 pounds) I would reallylike to connect up with some others that are in it for the REALLY LONG HAUL ( 250 pounds or more). Hi Cathy, I would like to lose at least 200 lbs. My BMI would be considered at the high end of 'normal' if I got to my goal of 145, which actually means losing 210 lbs. I'm down 90 now and feel terrific. I'm eagerly awaiting how I'll feel once I hit goal! -Marcia

Rose, Lisa, and Marcia, Glad to see I'm not quite as alone as I've been feeling - I'm down 98-99 pounds and can " almost taste" that first 100 pound goal ( I'm thinking it is going to taste REALLY GOOD!). The honeymoon is over for mee - about 2 weeks ago I started to get the snack bug - I hadn't had too many cragings until then - Now I have to plan my meals the day before to keep myself on track Rose - I'm curious, with your great numbers ( who-o-o Ho-o-o-o 120++ pounds!!!) - about how many calories do you consume is a day?? I think my biggest challenge is exercise - I have arthrittus and walk with a cane with moderate back pain - I cannot take most of my pre-surgery pain meds now and have to balance the amount of exercise I get to the amount of pain I can tolerrate. Thring to use the exercise bike more and doing some reading on streingth training to build more muscle. I'm still a bit over 400 pounds so some things I'm just not up to yet. i have to say - even with the limitations - I can see that the improvement is "giving me my life back" - I'm doing things I havn't done in over a year and am optomistic about the improvements to come I'd love to hear what you guys are doing for exercise Keep me posted Cathy

Cathy, I know I should probably keep track of calories etc. but I do not. I just make better choices in what I eat. I'm probably not the best role model in that most days I only eat one meal a day. I'm not really ever hungry. I have had and am still having complications from surgery. I had alot of complications on surgery day, I was suppose to have lap rny and was to only take an hr to an hr and a half, but my tissues were too thin and the staples wouldn't hold so he had to open me up and it ended up taking him over 4 or 5 hrs. He said by far I was his worst case ever! And he has been doing this surgery for almost 30 years. That being said, the complications that I have now is kinda like a stricture, the only difference is most ppl who have strictures it occurs at the stoma or the new connection to the small intestine. Mine, (I always have to be complicated) is at the top of my new pouch where it meets w/my esophagus. I go monday to be stretched again which will make the 5th time in just over 2 months. I have to go every 2 weeks to be opened. And he says I will need atleast 3 more after this one, he hopes that is all. So maybe my numbers are a reflection of the lack of food i'm able to eat. Like I said I maybe eat 1 meal a day and it is usually not the best choice but I figure since it is my only meal a day and I need nourishment, I do not count calories. I do try to watch carbs and I stay away from sugars but sometimes the only things I can keep down are very liquidy mashed potatoes or something like that. I even throw soup back up sometimes. As far as exercise goes, it is still hard on me. I have done alot of wear and tear on my joints over the years but I do try to get in as much exercise as possible. The main thing I do is WALK, WALK, WALK. I'm still only able to go about a mile but hey, it's better than nothing. Next month I am walking in the American Heart Walk in honor of my dad and brother. This time last year that thought wouldn't have even crossed my mind. I feel alot better but I still have quite a bit to go. Just keep your head up and think positively because if there is one thing i've learned, if you get discouraged, depressed and angry you tend to forget why you had this surgery to begin with and old habits come back and they are hard to break. So keep your head up and know you are not alone in this and I am here if you ever need to talk to someone!!! Hugs, Rose 422/297/175/148 surgery/current/my goal/dr goal

Hi Cathy! Yes, I have around 225-250 to lose. I haven't really set a goal yet because I can't ever really remember weighing less than 200. I think my goal will be 175??? I haven't talked about it with my surgeon yet, just that I will want to get to at least 200. I started at 384 and am now at 299.8 whew!!! I just made it under. You are definitely not alone. I am glad you posted. Denise

My surgery was April 13th and I started at 377. I am now at 277 and my goal is 160-170. It doesn't really seem to be in the realm of possibility to me most of the time. Then I come out to this web site and find hope again that it could actually happen. On exercise - Have you tried water aerobics? I have an inflammatory disease, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis and it still hurts too much to work out on land, but in the water I can really work hard for 45 - 60 minutes without pain. There are other large women and it is a very supportive atmosphere. It took me awhile to get there, but now I look forward to it all day on Mon, Wed and Fri. Thank you for posting about this, Cathy. I sometimes get down about how long the road is.... Dotsie
