Hi guys, I put a call into my surgeons office today, because I had a couple of questions. Mainly...if there was anything that I could do to help with the hair loss. I asked how much protein I should be getting (my paperwork says 50g-60g per day). I was told that I should be getting 82g of protein per day(apparently their guidelines have changed)! Yikes! I barely get the 50g! How the heck am I going to get that much protein per day???? If y'all have any suggestions at all, please pass them along! Anyway, some of the info she gave me that I'll pass on to you guys: 5g of Biotin each day. 82g of protein (apparently its based on how tall you are) Mulit vitamin twice a day Sublingual B-complex and of course Drink, drink, drink

I take one centrum a day and I just bought some Biotin extract for the hair loss. It says take one dropper but it doesn't say how many times a day though. My hair loss is unreal. I swear it's coming out in clumps. After I shower or run a brush through it I have mounds that I have to clean up. It's so upsetting. I did hear about the Biotin on another board so I went ahead and ordered it. I just received it yesterday but it's hard to tell how much to take beacuse it's liquid. I still can't take pills yet. I try very hard to get in as much protein as I can but I literally have to drink or eat it all day to get in enough. My Isopure shakes have 25 grams per scoop so I try to have two of them a day sometimes three if I can do it. I also eat Pure Protien bars which have 19/20 grams per bar. Some days are better than others but I usually end up not meeting my quota. I was using fitday.com to record it all but stopped. I take on centrum chewable everyday B-12 Now Biotin will be added Calcium I'm so not good at remembering this and it tastes AWFUL! Any advice about the hair loss would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping the Biotin will help. Jamie

Hello, This is what I've been told, You're hair lose isn't due to lack of Protein, it's more due to the stress you're body went through during the surgery. I've had three surgeries and lost hair each time, the other two surgeries had nothing to do with WLS so I tend to believe what I was told. I wouldn't worry too much about the hair loss it will stop. I bet if you look real hard you'll see that you are already growing new hair. Darla

I drink Champion Nutrition shakes. I love it and it taste goooood! It's got a total of 46g of protein (2 servings). The rest of the day I eat high protein foods (non fat milk, special K cereal, cheese, beans, lentil beans, egg whites). Good luck! Hey....you have the same surgery date! My doctor gave me the same recipe for helping with hair loss. He also said that it was the sheer stress of the surgery that caused it also. As far as getting protein in, I also add a very low suger protein bar of 20grams of protein to my daily food intake. I have also upped my milk consumption. It helps with liquids and protein. Hope this helps. I have lost a lot of hair as well and have trouble with the protein amts. Kim M.

Hi, Terri, Thanks for the advice. I use Centrum Silver as my multi, B12. Sublingual B-complex, Citracal "Creamy bites" which are yummy chocolate fudge and two a day are a treat, with low sugar and everything needed for calium citrate with Vit D. My protein is Ungry, which is a great drink. I mix 1 1/2 scoops with 4 oz. lactaid fat free "milk"/4 oz. water, which is also good and not too milky-ends up being 39 gms of protein, not too much sugar and the chocolate flavor is like chocolate milk. The strawberry is good too. I have two a day so I know I have the 78 gms. Everything else is from my food intake. Walmart has "Hair, Skin, & Nails" which has the Biotin you need. These were recommended by the RD in my Dr's office and so far is working well. Good Luck to you!

Have you tried any of the Worldwide Pure Protein products. I find them at GNC and Trader Joes. They have soda can size drinks that are great for my traveling job. There is one with 21 grams of Protein and one with 35 grams of protein. I like the Chocolate and the Vanilla (well, maybe like is too strong). Anyway, I can drink them as long as they are really cold. Worldwide also makes bars that I can eat. I usually have one throughout a day. My favorite is the SMores flavor. 180 calories, 19 grams of protein. I find it difficult to get my 80 grams of protein in a day unless I eat or drink one of these. By the way, my nut said 80 grams. My trainer says 100 plus grams to truly benefit from the exercise program I'm on. Good luck, Betsy

I aim for 100 grams a day. I have a protein shake in the morning with skim plus milk. That gives me 28 grams to start my day then I have a yogurt and fruit after I exercise for another 5 grams. I ge****er in while exercising. I then have 2 - 3 oz of meat protein per meal. That adds 36 -54 grams to my day. I also add a protein bar as a snack which has 23 grams. So that takes me to 92 - 110 grams per day. That is three meals two snacks and then water in between. Terrie

I usually get approximately 70 grams of protein daily through protein shakes and food. I have some hairloss but it is slowing now. According to my bariatric coordinator, this is from the surgery itself and not necessarily from a lack of protein. For vitamins, I take Optisource which I get from Walgreens.com. These were recommended as they are a bariatric vitamin. I take 4 of these per day and don't have to take any additional vitamin/mineral supplements. By taking these, I don't need the B-12, iron or calcium supplements. I get the additional calcium through dairy products. My last labs that I had done were fine, in fact I am no longer anemic which I was pre-surgery. I have started getting my protein powders from bariatriceating.com which has many different flavors and are delicious.
