Question for My April Peeps
Hey there! I had RNY on April 24th and am down a total of 55 lbs so far. I still have not tried sugar, and don't think I ever will. Protein shakes are the devil, I have tried so many of them I can't think straight - the water intake is still a struggle, but I keep plugging away at it and am also going to Curves. So, for the most part I'm doing okay and being "good".
My questions is this: There is no rhyme or reason to what does or does not make me sick. It is VERY frustrating. I can eat something on Monday at lunch and feel just fine, but then if I eat the exact same thing on Wednesday for dinner, it makes me really ill. Does anyone else experience this? Plus, the things that make me sick are CRAZY! For example, I can eat spagetti (which I VERY nervously tried) and I felt terrific, not even a hint of nausea. Then I made some homemade chicken salad to put a couple of crackers and it made me throw up. Please tell me someone else experiences this too...not that misery loves company...but I guess in this case it would be a tad bit comforting...
Thanks all! Hope you are having a blessed day!
Melissa
Ohhhh yeah. I figured out that microwaving leftover meats dries them out so much that my pouch revolts. So that's how I figured out the "Chicken good on one day, bad on the next" conundrum. So, now I cover all meats in the microwave with a wet paper towel. It steams them and keeps the moisture in your meat.
Moist meats = happy pouch

Hi Melissa-I just posted to someone the other day that my pouch is the same exact way. No rhymn or reason for mine either. Today I grabbed a very thin slice of deli ham on my way to work and it did not go over well. You think with how thin its sliced from the deli and I ate it in bites not whole. I don't know either. I asked my doc and he just said since we are still new the pouch is tempremental. It is very frustrating and confusing to say the least!

Hi, You're not alone in misery, I'm right there with you, It has not mattered if I cooked it, ate out, or if it's left overs. I may go a couple of days and be fine then wham...
My Dr. just done an endoscopic on me this past week said everything was fine, I just had a real sensitive pouch, go figure, said to keep trying and hopefully it would get better. I still can't eat any hamburger meat no matter how it's cooked.
Hope you get better at it to, being sick is the pits!
Take care, Hugs to you!

I no there are some things my pouch will not let me eat. One is anything with processed sugar. I can eat sauce with syrup but not with brown sugar. Also, if I eat to fast I will get sick then within an hour it comes up. If I don't take enough time to chew becaue I am talking to someone that is a problem as well.
Left over don't work well unless I heat them covered and vented so they stay moist.
Some days I can eat alot other day I can barely stand to eat.
Also, green tea from barnes and Noble makes me buzz from the caffine. It is like I am on speed. The green tea I make at home is fine.
I went to a family reunion this weekend. I ate pulled pork with brown sugar in it. I spent 2 hours laying down and running back and forth to the bathroom. I would be on the couch talking with someone one second and running to the bathroom the next. It was wierd because everyone knows I had the surgery and everyone acted like it was NORMAL. To me it is not I have only been sick 3 times.
It is a guessing game!!!

Hi Melissa! It's so good to hear from all the April people.
Yes, my pouch is temperamental also but mainly I believe my problems come from how I eat and not what I eat. If I go too fast, don't chew well enough, or eat too much then I have PAIN and am miserable. I don't have many bouts with nausea though.
I'm usually having 2-3 carb servings a day with my protein and trying to do cardio workouts 4-5 times a week. All in all, I feel pretty good with my energy level continuing to rise. It still is a struggle to get in all my water though.
Take care everyone and congrats on your progress!!!

hello melissa
You are sooo not alone. I'm in the same boat what I eat 1 day that agrees with me doesnt the next can't seem to figure it out I just keep on trying and hope it works.I'm down 80lbs since 4/10 which I'm very happy about other than the food issues I feel great just trying to get in more exercise good luck to you and have nice day Donna
I have this, too. Over time I am figuring out some reasons, but sometimes it makes absolutely no sense. Some reason:
1. If I eat too fast or don't chew enough.
2. If meat is not cooked in liquid. I'm still can't really eat grilled meat because it just doesn't disintegrate enough in my mouth and it is like likely to come back up.
3. If I am anxious or in a hurry. Even if I eat slowly, it is like my stomach is too nervous. Sometime, I have to really take a break and relax before my pouch will accept food.
4. If I forget and take a drink of something while eating.
5. If I eat too much of something that is liquid based like soup. I guess it is the same concept as #4.
I'm sorry that others are experiencing this, but it is somewhat comforting to know that it is not just me.

Melissa,
I had my surgery on the 26th and I get the same thing. One day chicken is fine the next no go. One day I cheese and milk are fine the next YUCK!! I'm not sure why that is but my dietician says that it could be preparation and not the actual food that is the issue. It could just be that your body is still trying to adjust to having major surgery.
As long as you are keeping food and liquid down for the most part things should be fine.
Best of luck.
Melissa
Hey Melissa,
I also have those same problems and it does get very frustrating but I just give it a few days try it again and usually it is ok.......I still cant really handle red meat or pasta or rice it just feels like a rock in my stomach so I stick to fruit veggies, and protein and it seems to work ok hang in there just remember it is not forever.......I too really dont want to try anything I am not suppose to have like sugar and soda but I really honestly dont miss them....
best of luck
lisa
