Milk consumption

I can't seem to find an answer in the papers I got in my pre-op classes so I figured I'd ask you guys. Are we supposed to be limiting our milk consumption? It has a lot of sugar...but it's lactose not "bad sugar." I've been craving milk like mad the past few days...I'm not a big milk drinker, never have been except teh last month I was pregnant and drinking a gallon every couple days. I don't plan to drink 8 glasses a day of it or anything (though what an easy way to get in all your fluids and protein at once) but I want to make sure I'm not having too much either.

I was told I could have skim milk and my nutritionist even recommended the carb countdown choc milk. so if you want a glass of milk i'm sure it's fine...atleast by my doctors standards anyway...hope it helps

My surgeon/nutritionist say yes to skim milk. Two 8 oz glasses a day plus whatever I get in with my protein drinks.

My NUT actually recommended milk, but only fat free. I believe that we need the calcium and other nutrients that are in it and it does have protein in it as well, and since we are all struggling to get in that 80 grams, I say go for it.

I am allowed carb countdown, soy milk, or Lactaid (all fat free) just not regular milk with lactose in it.

My nutritionist advised against more than a half glass of skim milk at a time because of the lactose, it is still a simple sugar, so it will cause dumping if you eat too much at a time. I was very surprised that she also said no more than 8 ounces of skim milk a day. I don't know her reasonong. I would think that as long as you don't drink more than you can tolerate at a sitting, 2-3 8 oz. glasses per day would be acceptable. I was also thinking as you were, I could drink milk and get liquids and protein in one. Heidi L-S

Milk...the bane of my existance. I really don't like the stuff. Unfortunately, being the good WLS patient I want to be, I am forced to drink 2-3 cups per day. The only way I get it in is to mix it in my hot chocolate, add it to coffee and use it for protein shakes. Sigh... Melissa

My nut. also said I could drink Milk - anything 2% or less, but she did not place any limits on it. THank goodness...I LOVE milk! I use milk to prepare a lot of the things I eat too...cream of wheat, cream soups, etc., so I'm sure I get a good dose of it (well, as much as I can consume, which is NOTHING compared to how much I drank pre-surgery now that I think of it...oh well, as long as my brain thinks it's a lot, that's all that matters!) I didn't know we could have the carb choc. milk though...I'll have to try to find some of that!
