When I was a year out from surgery my doc said to eat between 1000 and 1500 calories a day and to assume that I was done losing. I have lost about 160 lbs. I am still about 40 lbs overweight according to the charts but I am far from the 350 lbs mark that I started at.
Good luck!

Hello Anjail, I just made a post that I too am at a looooong stall. I am at 170 and should be at 125 (my doctor's goal). Today is my 1 1/2 year surgiversary. I am going tyo try to heed the advice of Julian and just eat carbs early in the day. Actually I do eat any bread (only 1 slice) in the am and maybe a tortilla in morning or afternoon. Also, I do usually have a fruit or vegetable with most of my protein meals. Sop Juiliran says to not eat any carbs with dinner. BTW, I am from Detroit originally (grew up in Oak, Park). I will be coming there for a visit on Oct. 18 for two weeks to see my mom and friends.

Topic: Never made goal :-(
Today is my year and half surgiversary and I still have 30 pounds to lose. Don't think I am going to make it. I do water aerobics 4-5 days a week. Have trouble with treadmill because my peripheral neuropathy in my right leg has gotten so much worse lately. I still weigh and measure my food when at home and I keep track in a note book my daily protein. I eat about 100 grams of protein a day, some days a bit more, some days a little less. I do eat carbs, but try to minimize the amount. I do put cream in my coffee, a bit of fat and sugar in that. I do not dump on anything. I thought that after a couple of months after doing intense wlater aerobics, the weight would start coming off. Any advice.? I am so glad I did this surgery, but a bit despondent on the looooooong stall like for about six months.

Thanks for all the responses. You have given me hope! I'm still gaining and losing the same 5 pounds lately but I've got to get off my butt and exercise.

Rae! You have done fantastically well! I have not been on the April '05 board for quite a few months. I remember you when we first started. I wish you well.

i don't lose weight on less than 1000 calories. everytime i went below i would plato.
i think everyone is different, but less than 1000 calories can't be nutritionally complete. i eat 1400- 1600 and maintain my weight w/ very little exercise. if i add exercise i lose 2-5 pounds a month. i am 1.5 yrs post-op. lost 120#

Anjail,
I'm sorry that you are having a hard time loosing weight with your surgery. What I am going to say will not be pretty, but it is what I believe to be the truth. My name is Julian, I had surgery 4/25/05. At the time of surgery, I was 485. I say it and looking back I still can't believe it. Needless to say, I am now 218 pounds, from a size 66 waist to a 38. I eat 70% protien. The rest is carbs. I have my little cheats, key word LITTLE. The mistake that I think some people make with this surgery is that they think that they dont have to make a life style change. That this will be easy. When you were sucking food through a straw for six weeks what did you think ? Was that easy ? The diet thing is no more. This is your life calling. The surgery effects are starting to level off. You will only start to gain weight. You can never have the life style that you had. Face it the life style that you had was not working out, the surgey was your way of helping you change that. You have to break the old habits. If I can loose 268 pounds you can loose 50. YOU CAN DO THIS !!! A little advice from me, I have my carbs in the morning, that would be a HALF of dunkin doughnuts bagel (HALF) with butter. And I like butter ! I have that and a cup of coffe. That is the LARGEST intake of carbs for the day. Carbs turn to sugar, sugar to fat, fat BAAAD ! Carbs are great for a morning boost, and you have ALL DAY TO BURN THEM OFF ! Half the amount of carbs you had for break fast, you can have for lunch, with a protien. MORE PROTIEN than carbs. If you dont know what carbs and protien are, read the ZONE DIET ! Do some research on the web, HELP YOUR SELF ! Dinner should be ALL protien ! NO CARBS ! NONE ZERO ZILCH. AGAIN, you can do this, YOU can ! Please I know that this email, comes off a bit harsh. But WHY did you do the surgery ? Think back to that and remind yourself. Look at the old pictures ! The fat pictures, I'll email you my before and after if it will help inspire you. If you have any questions, please email me, I will be more than happy to help you any way I can. I am going through it to. We all are here !

Topic: RE: calories per day
When I saw my nutritionist recently her goal for me was 1200 calories per day to continue to lose weight and stay nutrionally sound. I also had a med gem test to determine what my resting metabolic rate was. I think caloric intake varies from person to person due to metabolic rate, exercise frequency, and types of food eaten. I realize that most of the time carbs are really easy to eat and digest but for the most part they really are empty calories. If you must have carbs (and sometimes we must
) eat them early in the day so you can work them off as you day goes by. Try meat and veggies for dinner. Hope this helps!
