I would like to hear from others in my age bracket...I am 59. My doctor told me I'm a young 59! I have arthritis, in fact I need double knee replacement but was told no way, until I lost a hundred pounds. Who can lose a hundred pounds when they are inactive. Now that I've had surgery, my surgeon has stopped my arthritis medications because he says they have a tendency to eat holes in the lining of the stomach. So, I need advice, encouragement, love from others in this situation. Thanks!

Hi Christine, I am 53 and had my surgery 4-1-05. Things move a little slower when you are older but we just need to continue taking baby steps till we get to where we want to be. I'm a bad one to talk about exercise cause it's an effort to make myself get out there and I'm not always successful, but I keep on trying and you will too. Remember---BABY STEPS!!! Good luck Jackie

I am 60 (still..will be 61 on the 27th) and I also have arthritis in both knees and walk with a cane. I am 3mos post op and have lost 60 plus lbs. another 40 and I can do a knee replacement. In the meantime, I plan to take another cortisone shot in each knee. It helps for about a month or 6 weeks. Maybe by then I will have lost the extra 40 LOL!! Also, i do water aerobics at the YMCA 3x a week..I could do more but my dogs would miss me. I also walk some...but hopefully will do more after the shots. I highly recommend water exercises of some kind..they are really gentle on the knees. email me if you wish [email protected] Julia

Christine: Another one here. I am 55 and had surgery 4/7/05. I have arthritis in the neck, back and both shoulders. I need a shoulder replacement, but decided to loose the weight first. I not sure now I want any more surgery any time soon. This took a lot more out of me than I thought it would. Not as young as when I had my other various surgeries (4). I've lost 56 lbs at three months, but doing very little exercise. I too have stopped all medication I was taking before surgery. I am taking liquid oxycotin for my shoulder and back pain. I am starting to feel a little better, it is just going to take a long time. I was told this surgery could add fifteen years to my life so I now have some extra time to take it slow. I am scheduled to start aqua therapy in the next week or so, so I think that will help get me moving. My knees are also affected but not as bad as my arms. Hang in there, we all are going to make this. Beverly

I'm 54 and definitely a baby boomer! No arthritis for me, PTL. I had surgery on April 27th and am about 70 pounds down (50 from surgery date). I just got back from two weeks in Cabo san Lucas with my daughter. I am proud to say that I went parasailing! When I was younger I always turned down the opportunity because of my weight. This trip I did it! Good luck with our health to all of us. Judy
