I am 8 weeks out from surgery and was told by my surgeon that I could have nothing with caffiene, sugar or carbonation. I understand the sugar part and the caffiene part, but how long usually till you could have a nice glass of caffiene free diet coke? Tami

I was told NEVER! Carbonation was something I knew I would be giving up for life before I had WLS. Judy

Our surgeon's nutritionist says you can have it after a few months, if you let most of the carbonation settle first. Pouring it over ice and letting it sit for about ten minutes should do it. But ask your surgeon's staff before you go for it! Gail

Hi Tami, My surgeon told me that carbonated drinks are NEVER to be drank again after surgery. I was lucky, I haven't drank carbonated drinks in years so I wasn't so dissapointed by that, it was the sugar I was going to miss....now at 6 weeks out, I can tolerate suger without dumping which isn't really a "good" thing.

Well here is the deal , If you want caffine, you then have to take in an equal amount MORE of water or something that hydrates. Caffine is a dehydrant, thats why they tell you not to have it. So just remember that if you drink 8oz of something with caffine, you then have to take in 8 extra oz of water on top of your normal intake. I dont know about you guys but I cant even take in the amounts they want me to now. Sugar is different for everyone BUT they say you can take in around 10 grams of sugar, so you have a measurement, 1 teaspoon of sugar equals 4 grams of sugar. So moderation with caffine and sugar is the key. Of course if we all knew about moderation we wouldn't have had to have gone for this surgery. As far as the carbonation goes, the bubbles in the carbination expand in your stomach. Thats a no no. We didnt go for this surgery to expand the pouches that we went through so much to have made for us. So for those of us who like semi flat or flat soda we're dancin ! for those who don't, well it stinks ! Good luck to you. Peace out Julian 6 weeks out 80lbs lighter !

Recently published studies suggest that drinks that are primarily made of flavored water are still water and still considered water intake. I don't much like plain water and drink a lot of tea. I haven't had any issues with caffeine and appreciate it's appetite suppressant qualities Lisa

Hi Tami -- I'm about 8 weeks out too and was DYING for a diet coke. My doctor said absolutely no, never ever, forever until you die, which I just couldn't live with. His rationale is that diet coke leads to other bad eating habits, like eating junk food and sugary foods. Well, I asked another surgeon during an online chat and while he too discouraged patients from drinking it, he said there is NO medical literature that states it will stretch your pouch. So, when I want one -- ocassionally -- I have one, since it won't hurt me or "undo" any of the hard work thus far. Hope that helps!

Before I went into the hosp. I unscrewed all the caps on my diet ginger ale bottles. I now drink it flat. It's ok. Perhaps that would pass muster with your surgeon? BTW, I was told I could eventually carbonated drinks. I'm not sure exactly when (I assume now if I wanted) but as I'm constantly trying new things it would be up to me to determine if the gas was bad from it or no problem.
