I am 3 weeks Post-op today and I just have to say that I can not stand this part of the diet. I will admit that it is better than the liquids only diet for the 1st 2 weeks. I am just so bored. I have no desire to have what I am able to have at this point. All I have been able to have is eggs, deli turkey or ham, cheese, tuna, chicken, yogart ( the no sugar low carb kind only, which isnt very good), and skim milk. I can not wait until I see the nutritionist on Monday 5/23. Hopefully she can give me some ideas or suggestions. I have only been on solid foods for 1 week and have 3 more weeks to go to get to stage IV of the diet whi*****ludes more of a variety of foods to choose from. I knew what to expect and I know that it is only for a matter of time but having to do it and live it is a different story. This is definalty not easy. It takes a lot of planning and commitment; it can also be a mental challenge. I would love to hear how all of you are doing at this point and if you might have any suggestions? I would like to make it clear that I am not complaining or having any regrets, I am just trying to express how I am feeling and see if someone might have some suggestions or might be a few weeks ahead and might have some insight for me. BTW, I am down 24 lbs since surgery and have a total weight loss of 38 lbs (pre & post weight loss combind. Thanks for listening! Rachael

Hello rachael, I do know what u mean.It seems like u are doing pretty good with the fluids. It is hard for me considering I had a gas pocket that was so painful.I go to my nutritionist on the 24th hopefully advancing to third stage which would be solids. I dont see much of the difference you still have to chew and make lilke it it puree any how. Watermellon yummie is my favorite for now. Good Luck and God Bless ya!!! wls sista sonia

Hey Sonia, Well, I try to get to 56oz of fluid a day but there are more days that I do not make it all. I was able to drink much more when I was just on liquids. But I am still getting in enough for now. I would love to have some watermelon. I am going to ask my NUT on Monday. We will see! ~Rachael

I had my surgery on 4/27/05 and am just now starting on pureed foods. I count myself blessed to be having that. I don't know what kind of wls you had. I had RNY open, and the diet schedule seems to be very different. I had 1 week clear liquid, 2 weeks full liquids (added puddings and yogurts), now I am on 2 weeks pureed foods and then 1 week soft foods. I guess all doctors have differing opinoins on what is the proper post-op diet. This one is working for me. I have to make sure I get 64 oz. fluid each day, and 5 or 6 small (2 oz) meals per day. this includs 54 grams of protein (per day), less than 2 gr. of added sugars (per meal), and less than 5 gr. of fats (per meal). I hope you do well. I have lost 41.4 lbs. whi*****ludes 19 lbs of water that I had picked up in the hospital during my 4 day stay. Keep up the good work and don't give in to the "Reese Cup demon"

Hi Dale, I also had open RYN surgery. I have noticed how all of the post op diets vary myself. It can make it confusing. Its just hard to keep to the diet that was given to us by our own nutritionist because you want to eat or try some of the foods other people seem to be eating at this stage. My 1st day post op was clear liquids only. Then from day two to day 14 it was liquids only. Protein shakes, sf jello, pops, and broths. From 2 weeks to six weeks post op its 5 2oz servings of protein and 56oz of fluids. I couldnt wait to get to this stage, but got sick of ir very quickly as I knew I would. Only a little over 2 weeks left on this part of the diet and things will get soooo much better. Take care!

Hi Jennifer, I feel bad that you pouch is not working with you. When I am agravated with my diet I think of all the people I see on here who are at the same stage as I am and even ahead of me who cant even eat what I am eating yet or like you cant keep it down. I am not a big fan of the protein shakes myself. Its weird too because I drank them everyday 8 weeks prior to surgery and loved them. Go figure! lol I have had the carb countdown before (not since post op though). I should get some, I liked it. Jennifer, what have you eaten that you have had a hard time with so far and have you re-tried them again? What is you diet for post op? Rachael

My surgery was 4/26/05 and I am not liking this part of the diet either. I had LAP RNY. My diet is week 1 was liquids, week 2-4 is low fat pureed, no concentrated sweets. I am just starting week 4 and will see the surgeon this week and will hopefully be advanced to reg. food. I have "snuck" in a few things here and there when I felt I could tolerate it. I'm just so bored with pureed food. Most of the time I am having bean and bacon soup, chili, refried beans or tuna, the first two pureed, the tuna just moistened with fat free mayo. I tried it with reg. mayo once and it did not stay down. Scrambled eggs did not work out too well either, but an egg over easy was fine. I actually had a small piece of toast with it. No crust, and it was well saturated with the yolk. Twice I have had a grilled cheese sandwich, again, no crust and I dipped it in tomato soup so the bread was soft. I have also had some popcorn. I know I shouldn't have, but we went to the movies and I hadn't been to a theatre in sooooooo long and I always loved popcorn. I just sucked on it and spit the kernal parts into a napkin. It is hard to know what to follow sometimes. It seems that each surgeon has such different recomendations. I am trying to follow my surgeon's recommendations as much as I can, but I sometimes make alterations if I know someone else who's had WLS has tried something and it's worked, I may try to add it into my diet. As long as it is something healthy and not going to put me on a bad eating track. I think this surgery is so different for each individual as far as what he/she can tollerate post op, even for people who have had the same surgeon. You have to take the suggestions of your surgeon, but also tailor it to your own individual needs and tollerances. One suggestion I have for a little variety is to add different spices/flavorings to the foods you are eating. Sometimes I add a little LF cheese to the beans or chili. I also make the tuna differently. Sometimes I add a little relish or mustard just to make it different. I am going to make a black bean soup tomorow that has sour cream and mild salsa in it. ~Deb
