Protein drinks make me sick
I had my surgery april 11th and i still get sick to my stomach when i drink my protein drinks. I feel nausea and like im going to pass out. I have to lay down after i drink my protein drinks. I thought maybe after a while it would stop but it hasnt. Does anyone else go through this. I only drink 2 a day because i cant handle the feeling. I dont have this feeling with anything else i drink or eat. How can i get my protein without the drinks? Yuck just thinking about the protein drinks make my stomach go around. I have tried different types of protein drinks and nothing helps. Please any ideas?
Sheri,I had my surgery the same date.I have a problem with the protein too,but my problem is the whey protein drinks make me gag and the liq. protein just tastes so bad so i I don't drink it more than 1-2 times a day I know i'm not getting near what i should because most comes from food and i can't eat much more than 2 bites of ground meat.Good luck with your protein maybe it will get better. Hi Sheri:
I get most of my protein from STALLONE HIGH PROTEIN PUDDING -- each can has 20g of protein and it is really delicious. Right now they have chocolate and vanilla -- they will be coming out with more flavors soon. They have it at GNC, and if you love it, you can get it in bulk for less on line (http://www.discountanabolics.com/page/DA/PROD/IN05 has the best price I have found).

HI All,
I am a little behind you as I had my open RNY on April 27th. I LOVE my protein drink every morning. My surgeon and his partners recommend Pro-Complex. I get it at GNC. Comes in many flavors including Rocky Road. I love the chocolate mixed with water. Can't wait 'til I can add 1/2 banana. The shake is made with two scoops of powder which equals 55 grams of protein. When I was in the hospital, my roomate was back in after having had surgery the week before. She ended up back in the hospital because she couldnt' keep down her protein shake or water and therefore was getting deydrated. It ended up that the powder she was using was high in sugar. Check your product and make sure it only has about 3g sugar or less. Hope this helps.

You may be lactose intolerant. You might try using soy milk instead of milk to make your shakes. I use Designer Whey from TJOes and if I have too much it will make me slightly nauseous. I use only 1 scoop (18gr) and do it 2x daily only. I mix it w/ 5 oz of soy milk, 1/2 packet of splenda, a small amt of frozen fruit (if it is the Strawberry one), and one cup of ice ...blend it until it is the consistency of a milk shake.. It actually tastes ok and goes down ok.

Hi Sheri... I had my surgery on March 18th which makes me a little over 2 months post op and I, like u, had problems with getting my protein drinks down even with a shaker. I am drinking the OnWhey Vanilla Ice Cream or Strawberry Flavored and have invested in a Magic Bullet which has sure made a difference. I love my protein drinks. I have one scoop (23 grams of Protein) with FF Milk (8 gms protein) and 2 splendas and crushed ice and it is delicious. It sure has made a difference. I want to drink them all day long now. I found out about the Magic Bullet on this message board one day and bought mine at Walgreen's. Best of luck to you on the losing side. Linda M - Texas
First of all - make sure your doctor or dietician knows this. Protein is very important for your insides to heal.
Are you mixing the protein mix with milk? If so, you may be lactose intolerant. Try mixing a vanilla with crystal light or something. If the whey protein doesn't work for you, you can try soy or egg proteins or a blended which I believe is better for you. A good blended is one that has been mentioned which is Optimum Nutrition Pro-Complex.
Do not struggle with these issues on your own. Make sure you are involving the dietician or who ever is responsible for your food progression. You don't want to get 3 months down the road without enough protein because your body will start taking muscle!
